How to Install, Update and Remove Notepad++ Plugins

Notepad++ is an excellent replacement of the Windows Notepad. Notepad++ is also a free text editor with updated features like bookmarks, macro recording, zoom in and out, tabbed interface, etc. It ++ also has some special features for programmers such as code folding, scripting, markup languages, syntax highlighting and much more.

Steps to access the Notepad++ Plugin Manager

Where Notepad++ already has the great features, it can be more powerful with plugin. Notepad++ Plugin Manager is the platform that allows the Notepad++ user to extend its capabilities. To install, update and remove Notepad++ Plugins you’ll have to access Notepad++ Plugin manager on your device.

Settings to be done during Installation

If you’ve already installed the Notepad++ application on your device, then to do settings to access Plugins Admin, you’ll have to uninstall and reinstall it again. Make sure to click on ‘Yes’ button while uninstalling to keep your custom settings. After this, reinstall Notepad++ and remember to set the settings as you want.

Note: While installing Notepad Setup, on the ‘Choose Components,’ select ‘Custom’ from the dropdown button and then check the box of ‘Plugins Admin’ from the list.

To access the Notepad++ Plugin Manager

The Plugin Manager window contains the full lists of available and installed plugins. So, to install, update and remove plugins you need to access the Plugin manager window.

1. Open ‘Notepad++.’

2. Click on ‘Plugins’ tab.

3. And select ‘Plugin Admin’ from the options.

Steps to install Available Notepad++ Plugin

In the available tab of the Plugins Admin window, a list of available Notepad ++ plugins will show up. You can install them to your Notepad++.

1. Go to ‘Plugins Admin’ windows.

2. Open ‘Available’ tab from the left-top corner.

3. Check the box of the ‘Plugin,’ that you want to install.

4. And then click on ‘Install’ button at the upper-right corner.

After installing, Plugins Admin window will close automatically, and a warning message written as “The Notepad++ will exit and restart to complete the installation’ will appear on the screen.

5. Click on ‘Yes’ button.

Doing this will move the installed plugins from available to the installed tab.

To install a Notepad++ Plugin manually

• If you want to install a plugin from the available tab, then you need to download it from a safe site.

• Create a new folder with the name plugin into the Notepad++ main folder.

• Copy the ‘DLL file’ and other files and paste them to the newly created plugins folder.

• Now, open ‘Notepad++.’

The manually installed plugins will be added to the plugins menu.

If you want to add more plugins directly through the Notepad++ applications then, open ‘Notepad++’ > click on ‘?’ > select ‘Get More Plugins.’

Steps to update a Notepad++ Plugin

If an update is available for the plugin, then Updates tab will show up on the Plugins Admin window.

To check and update plugins:

1. Click on ‘Plugins’ and select ‘Plugin Admin.’

2. Go to the ‘Updates’ tab.

3. Check the box of the plugins to select for updating.

4. And then click on the ‘Update’ button at the top-right corner.

5. Click ‘Yes’ on the exit confirmation box.

Updating is complete, now Notepad++ will restart with the updated version of plugins. You can’t upgrade manually installed plugins.

Steps to remove a Notepad++ Plugin

You can easily remove an included plugin that you don’t need from the Notepad++ Plugin manager, but it won’t be able to remove the manually installed plugin.

1. Click on ‘Plugins’ and select ‘Plugin Admin.’

2. Go to ‘Installed’ tab.

3. Check the box of the plugins to select them to remove.

4. Click on the ‘Remove’ button at the top-right corner.

The selected removed plugins now move back to the available plugins tab. That’s it! Use the above guidelines to customize and make your Notepad++ more powerful.
