How to increase the efficiency of RoRo Vessels?

Wheeled cargo like trucks, trailers, automobiles or railroad cars provide the benefit of rolling on and off its transportation carrier. Roll-on/ Roll-off vessels are specially engineered to carry these kinds of cargo, unlike lo-lo or what is also known as lift-on/lift-off vessels, which make use of either dock cranes or built-in cranes for loading and unloading cargo. Generally, RoRo vessels have robust built-in ramps, which facilitate easy on and off loading by rolling the freight on and off the vessel. In some types of RoRo vessels, the ramp is engineered in the middle to make the operation easy.

RoRo vessel is usually measured in lane meters. A lane meter can be defined as the unit of deck area for RoRo vessels. To define it further, a lane is a two meters wide strip of deck. With this measurement unit, the total effectual deck area of the cargo is determined. 

Advantages of RoRo Vessels:

The benefit that most of the RoRo vessels have is that they are not very much dependant on the port’s infrastructure. They can load and unload without making use of large equipments at the harbour like trucks and cranes. The freights can be loaded and discharged even if there is no docking facilities for the vessel. RoRo vessels have the capability to transport a large variety of items, which is not only restricted to cargo that can roll by itself. Types of cargo comprise of containers, railway wagons, project cargo and boats. It is required to use jack-up trailers or cassettes/ roll trailers to store such cargo. These trailers are pushed and crammed in proper place by special terminal tractors. Therefore, in a nutshell, these RoRo vessels can increase the effectiveness of loading and discharging and thereby, saving time.
  
Enhancing the effectiveness of Ro Ro Vessels:

  • The ship’s cargo input can be increased

Apart from the above mentioned advantages, the effectiveness of Ro-Ro ships can be increased further. By vertically extending the ship, one can manage increased cargo input. But in case of RoPax vessels, the requirement for damage stability are more complicated because it has to fulfil the SOLAS requirements together with Stockholm agreement. Depending on in-depth cost/benefit analysis, it was figured out that for optimum cargo input, removing the lower hold and installing a complete vehicle deck the top is considered to be a better option.
  
  • The speed of the ships can be increased 

In order to increase the speed, the goal should be to design hulls with minimum resistance. There are several numerical tools present today, which can calculate the flow around the vessels. If the sideline processes like post-dispensation, grid generation, hull-form changes, etc. are mechanized as per the demands of the design process, an entire calculation cycle can be completed in a couple of minutes. 

If you are seeking RoRo vessels for sale, you should keep in mind that the operational efficiency can also be increased if one can avoid a few things such as faulty sea-keeping conducts (extreme acceleration, uneasiness, speed losses), faulty maneuvering (traversing, turning, yaw checking).
