One of the most essential vitamins for growth and development of the body is Vitamin D. This vitamin helps the body absorb Calcium which is an essential element for maintaining the strength in bones. Excess of Parathyroid hormone, which is produced in the thyroid gland, can absorb the bone tissue and make the bones brittle and weak. Vitamin D checks the production of this hormone and keeps the bones healthy.

Besides this, Vitamin D also plays a major role in improving the motor skills and strengthens the immune system – which is the body’s natural defence against diseases.

Ayurvedic medicine for vitamin D deficiency

Vitamin D deficiency has become quite common these days among the population because of our unhealthy lifestyle. One of the most abundant and readily available sources of vitamin D is the sunlight. Exposure to clear sunlight triggers the production of vitamin D in the body, but due to our office based lifestyle, where we have to stay indoors from sunrise to sundown, we hardly get any exposure to sunlight. Luckily, Ayurveda has a potent medicine for vitamin D deficiency.

According to Ayurveda, some of the rich sources of vitamin D are Ghee, Cow’s milk, fishes/especially sea fishes, cod fish oil, egg yolk, white mushrooms, and grain products. These are also the natural Ayurvedic medicine for Calcium and so they are doubly beneficial. But according to Ayurveda, merely providing vitamin D supplements to the body is not enough. The true etiological factors that are responsible for causing the deficiency need to be isolated and then removed.

By properly monitoring Ahaar and Vihaar, practicing Yoga (especially Pranayam), following the early to bed, early to rise schedule and giving the body regular exposure to sunlight – the vitamin D levels in the body can be increased and maintained.

It has also been found that Abhyanga (the practicing of massaging the body with dosha-specific herbal oils), which is one of the five Panchakarma practices in Ayurveda is greatly beneficial for strengthening the bones.

By following a proper Ayurvedic diet, staying away from unhealthy practices and spending some time in the sunlight can not only help increase the levels of vitamin D in the body, but it can also help in developing a healthier and more prosperous lifestyle altogether that will further reduce the risk of other diseases as well.
