How to Choose Your Engineering Branch

by Tina Singh Professional Content Writer

Engineering is an all-time favourite undergraduate degree for the lucrative job opportunities it presents after completion. We keep hearing about unbelievable placement offers that students of some of the top engineering colleges in India get. Students start preparing for engineering entrances right after primary school nowadays and rarely you will see PCM student not going to coaching for IIT-JEE. And yet, when they finally get selected for engineering colleges they are lost when they have to choose a branch.

What to consider?

Subjects

Find out the subjects that you will have to study for that branch. For example, if you like writing program codes and creating algorithms, you can do well with Computer Science (CS) or Information Technology (IT). But if you rather like to work hands-on with machines / physical objects then you are better off with Mechanical or Civil.  Almost all engineering colleges including top engineering colleges in Chhattisgarh publish the list of branches and main subjects on their website.

Job prospects

After all, many choose engineering for a better chance at good job opportunities. So it’s important to know which jobs are in demand at the time. Speaking to recently graduated engineers and faculty members can help get a clear picture of this. Here it is also important to see how much the college helps you in placements. For example, Dr. C.V. Raman University, (CVRU) Engineering College, which is one of the best engineering colleges in Chhattisgarh conducts Mega Job Fair for its recent graduates inviting companies from various industries for recruitment.

Personal aptitude and feasibility

It is important to evaluate your personal situation and practical feasibility when choosing a branch. For example, even if you get your favorite branch in one of the best engineering colleges in Raipur but you can’t live there or cannot travel there daily, it is not a practical option for 4 years. Or say you take the Civil branch in one of the top engineering colleges in India, but you cannot go to sites or stay outdoors for long, it will be very difficult for you to successfully work in the civil industry later on.

How to find out?

Talk, Talk & Talk

Talk to as many people as you can. Talk to friends of your parents, your seniors, your teachers, and anybody you know, who may be able to give you information about the branches, colleges, job prospects and various industries. Here you have to be careful to listen only to authentic sources and block out opinions that are not supported by facts.

Career Counsellor

These are professionals who can help you evaluate your personal aptitude and interests through scientific methods like questionnaires and tests. They are trained for this and have experience working year on year with hundreds of students.

College admission offices

Most college admission officers will be more than willing to guide you in selecting a branch. The admission officer at CVRU Engineering College says “We try to assist the students as much as possible. After all, it’s a very important choice they have to make. “

Choosing a branch is a life-changing decision and getting as much information beforehand as possible is the best strategy.
