How to care for sensitive teeth with orthodontics?

by Shubhi Gupta Sensodyne : Healthy Dental Tips
It is increasingly common to use orthodontic appliances in the adult phase to improve aesthetics or correct the bite. Appropriate oral hygiene can help you to optimize orthodontic treatment and prevent setbacks that may complicate it, as is the case of the appearance of tooth sensitivity.

Dental brackets facilitate the accumulation of food debris between the teeth and the formation of dental plaque. Bacterial plaque is a colorless and sticky layer made up of bacteria and other substances that stick on the teeth. The accumulation of this bacterial plaque around the brackets can lead to the appearance of cavities, bad breath, stains and gum diseases. The forces that orthodontics applies to generate the movement of the teeth can cause tooth sensitivity, which can be more marked during the first weeks after starting treatment.

  1. Brush your teeth after every meal, including the league. This brushing should be thorough, especially between the gum and the tooth, where the dental biofilm usually accumulates more efficiently to eliminate the maximum plaque.

  2. It is advisable to add a mouthwash routine after brushing. The use of mouthwash with fluoride can help to sanitize and strengthen the parts of the mouth in which the brackets hinder hygiene and tend to accumulate bacteria thus preventing the occurrence of tooth decay and protecting tooth enamel.

  3. If tooth sensitivity appears, it is advisable to use a sensitive toothpaste. A specific mouthwash to reach areas of difficult access, as well as a gel for moments of very acute dental sensitivity where a rapid desensitizing action is required. Sensodyne toothpaste is one of the best cure for sensitive teeth.

  4. It is also crucial that, during orthodontic treatment, professional prophylaxis should be continued at least every six months to prevent tartar formation and plaque buildup.

  5. In addition to specific oral hygiene, take care of food and habits. It is advisable to limit sweet foods, sugary drinks and sticky foods such as chewing gum, as well as avoid biting hard things, such as some nuts. Limit the consumption of acidic foods that can produce tooth sensitivity and can also damage the enamel (tooth erosion), favoring the hypersensitive teeth cause.
