How to Block and Bounce Back Emails with Block Sender

by Scott Robinson Developer
If you're like most people out there, you're probably tired of the constant barrage of unwanted emails clogging up your inbox. These are likely emails from persistent marketers, online retailers, or other odds and ends you just want to avoid. Then it's time to take control of your Gmail inbox with Block Sender.

There are a number of ways to try and combat this - for example, most email providers have spam filters. However, oftentimes that's not enough. That's where other tools come in handy. In this article we'll be taking a look at one such tool, Block Sender.

What is Email Spam?

Email spam, also known as unsolicited bulk email (UBE) or junk mail, are unwanted emails sent out in bulk to unsuspecting recipients. They can contain harmful content, advertising you've not subscribed for, or attempts at phishing your personal information. With the ever-increasing use of email for personal and business communication, the amount of spam sent has grown exponentially over the years, making tools like Block Sender a must-have.

Why Block and Bounce Back Emails?

"Why" you block emails is probably obvious - attempting to unsubscribe is often unsuccessful, so the only way to keep these emails from your inbox is to block them from getting there in the first place.

Bouncing emails, however, is a little-know trick to make the sender think that your inbox no-longer exists. If they send you and email and get a bounce-back in return, they're less likely to send additional emails if their previous attempts don't get through.

How to Block Emails with Block Sender

Using Block Sender to block emails in Gmail is quite straightforward. Here's how to do it:

1. Install the Block Sender for Gmail extension from the Chrome web store.
2. Open Gmail, sign up for Block Sender, and link your account.
3. Open the unwanted email.
4. Click the Block button in the toolbar.
5. Choose how you'd like to block future emails (sender, subject, or domain).

From then on, you won't receive any more emails based on your block method. So, for example, if you block all emails from a given domain, you won't receive any more emails from that site, regardless of who is sending it.

Various ways to Block Emails with Block Sender

Dealing with email spam can be a real hassle. Thankfully, with the right tools, it doesn't have to be.

Block senders by email: Using this method, you won't receive any emails from the blocked sender.

Block emails by domain: As mentioned above, by blocking an entire domain, no users of that website can email you.

Block emails by subject: Some spammers will continually send the same spam email over and over. In these cases, you can block the given subject, which ensures you won't receive that same email again, regardless of what email or domain they send from.

These are just a few of the ways to block emails. With Block Sender, there are many others, like blocking entire TLDs (i.e. .com, .org, .xxx, .xyz, etc), blocking IP addresses, blocking headers, etc.

Note: Use blocking responsibly! It's a powerful tool and can accidentally block more than what you intended. For example, be careful not to block something too common, otherwise you'll miss out on legitimate emails as well.

How to Bounce Back Emails with Block Sender

Bouncing back an email basically means rejecting the email and sending back an "undeliverable" message to the sender.

Using Block Sender, you can either manually select an email to bounce back or you can set up a block to automatically bounce back emails with a certain property.

To do this, do the following:

1. Open the email you want to bounce back.
2. Click the Block button and then "Reply with..."
3. Select "Fake Bounce Back" from the dropdown menu.
4. Click "Send response".

The sender will be sent a fake error message intimating that your email address doesn't exist. This could convince persistent spammers or harassers that your email is no longer active and encourage them to stop emailing you.

Conclusion

Opening your inbox should not be an exercise in stress management. Tools like Block Sender simplifies the process of reclaiming your email space, by offering a variety of way to filter, block and bounce back emails. Just remember to use these tools judiciously to ensure that important emails don't unintentionally get caught in the blocks!
