by Simon Candy Musician And Guitar Instructor

In this video, you learn learn the 3 approaches for fingerpicking guitar.

Despite the many thousands of patterns that exist, there are in fact only 3 approaches to fingerpicking guitar.

Focusing on each approach, rather than the tiresome task of learning and memorising thousands of patterns will provide you with the technique required to play such patterns.

Here are the 3 approaches for fingerpicking guitar:

Approach 1: Single Notes

Plucking notes in a singular fashion is one of 3 ways to fingerpicking guitar. It’s something you will do often. Work on the technique of picking single notes, one at a time, and patterns that use this approach become easy to play.

Approach 2: Notes Together

Plucking multiple notes together is another way to fingerpicking guitar. It’s something you will do often, and unlike single notes, there are only so many combinations. Work on the technique of plucking notes together and patterns that use this approach become easy to play.

Approach 3: Pinching

Pinching notes together is the third approach to fingerpicking guitar. It’s something you will do often, and like notes together, there are only so many combinations. Pinching is using your thumb and one other finger to pluck any two strings together. If you’ve played “Blackbird” by The Beatles before you’ll know what I mean.
