How TMT bars protect your house from natural disasters?

by Ankita Sehgal Freelance Blogger, Lives in New Delhi
Long time back, homes and commercial buildings in India were constructed with unprocessed iron rods and concrete slabs. But the chemical rusting property of rods affects the stability of structures in the long run. That in turn makes the house prone to frequent repairs and unsafe from natural disasters.
In order to meet the safety standards, a special method approved by the Bureau of Indian Standards created TMT bars- A thermo mechanically treated bar; an alternative to save money, property and the precious lives of our dear ones. The high strength combined with higher ductility keeps the structure safe from destruction and stands for decades longer than traditional methods used.

The optimum balance between toughness and flexibility makes TMT bars perfect material while it comes to construction. Produced with technological innovation, the bars have high weld-ability to keep the construction structure unchanged. In fact, India’s top 10 TMT bar manufacturers put their trust in it for any concrete construction.

The type Fe 500D and Fe 500 of TMT bar are majorly used for construction activities. The bars are crafted by the steel industry under a heavily regulated manufacturing process to make them easily bendable. But how does it protect the construction against disasters?

Earthquake
Earthquake TMT bars due to high ductility and bendability safeguard the building from earthquake vibrations. To resist the seismic vibrations in especially zone 5 areas, TMT reinforced bars play a significant role.
Ductility withstands earthquakes. The vibrations are absorbed by the bars and reduce the damage. The high elongation index ensures inelastic strains and yield strength restore the steel rods to its original shape after any seismic activity.

Flood
Flood prone areas are highly prone to damage through sheer wear-and-tear and corrosion. But the anti-corrosive property of epoxy coating on TMT bars extends its life.  The epoxy coating made with a factory based technique has excellent adhesion and remains uniform throughout. This low maintenance sustainable solution is highly flexible and apt for areas with high exposure to water and moisture.
Not only it withstands with flood but also is resistant to warping, twisting, rotting and shrinkage in moist conditions.

Storms
Any building structured with plain cement concrete cannot survive the wind storms, load of the occupants and dead load of the building. The TMT bars are manufactured with quenching and tempering. The tough surface possesses unique mechanical and chemical properties that  provide strength, weld ability and ductility in the construction.
Structures strengthened with TMT bars are able to resist hurricanes, and tornadoes. That makes it highly economical and safe for use.

Quality is an important factor when it comes to TMT bars. One can choose from Tata Tiscon, SAIL, Essar steel, Shyam steel and other well-known brands known in the steel industry but the super rolling process adopted by JSW Neosteel makes it the best in industry rib pattern and have controlled size tolerance to ensure better bonding between cement and concrete.
