How CMMS and OEE are related?

by Simon Hopes Author

What is CMMS:

The term CMMS is short for Computerized Maintenance Management System and is a computer software intended to support maintenance management. Like Enterprise Asset Management (EAM systems), it seeks to improve maintenance and management of company assets through streamlining and automation of maintenance management, work order management, inventory management, purchasing and clear scheduling. While a CMMS system is focused on maintenance and operations, EAM is considered a more long-term system, being a more comprehensive solution that includes all CMMS functions as well as asset lifecycle management functionality and support for analysis and optimization.

What is OEE:

In today’s competitive climate, even small improvements can lead to significant benefits to your bottom line. That is especially evident in the manufacturing industry where shaving off a few seconds on one production process or reducing the number of defects for just 1% can bring in tens of thousands of dollars on a monthly basis.

One of the most common measurements used to optimize production is OEE (overall equipment effectiveness).

When used correctly, measuring OEE gives you a deep understanding of your production process which results in some major benefits:

  • squeeze every drop of performance from your machinery
  • reduce the number of defective products/parts
  • maximize workforce productivity
  • reduce asset repair costs by noticing problems early on
  • optimize your whole production process by eliminating wasteful actions

All of these improvements will ensure that you stay competitive on the market and give you the ability to maximize ROI from all assets that you add to your production line.

If those benefits sound appealing, continue reading this article and learn how you can take full advantage of OEE at your facility.

CMMS and OEE – How are they related?

While CMMS and EAM are solutions to manage and maintain your equipment, the OEE system (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is there to get the most out of your assets. The OEE measures the overall effectiveness of your manufacturing equipment. It is a solution that helps to improve your business’ performance by identifying areas for improvement at the operational level. Using a good CMMS that is tailored to your business, will improve the availability, performance and quality of your equipment, improving the OEE. With an OEE system you get the tools to follow up your production and support to optimize the utilization of your manufacturing asset. A comprehensive CMMS can have a significant positive impact on equipment availability and performance rate and, to a lesser degree, quality rate. As a leading CMMS, Maintenance Connection reduces unplanned downtime and minimizes repair time when unplanned downtime does occur.
