How can teachers support vulnerable children at school

A child is considered vulnerable if a part of their development is not taking place at the average rate. In every classroom there would be at least one child who finds difficulty in coping up with his learning process because of the vulnerable background he belongs to that affects his mental health. The vulnerable children such as orphans, children’s of drug addicts, living in extreme poverty, children abused by parents or their guardians, children abandoned by parents, face a host of problems in the classroom. They generally show a slow learning process and even face difficulty in freely communicating and interacting with others. Such children even sometimes show unusual behaviour patterns. A teacher is the most important person in a school and she can contribute towards supporting such vulnerable children in the following ways.

It is necessary that the teachers pay attention to the behavioural patterns exhibited by the vulnerable children. Vulnerable children face attachment issues because of the rejection they face in life. Such children generally tend to push away everyone from themselves because of the fear of getting rejected. They even tend to reject other people before they themselves get rejected by others. The teachers should acknowledge such behaviours and adjust their reactions appropriately so as to build a healthy relationship with such vulnerable children. In the vulnerable children the social and emotional levels of development do not match their chronological age and fail to develop skills like those of their peers. The teachers should consider the stage and age of such vulnerable children and take steps accordingly to develop skills in such children.

The aspect of nurture that plays a crucial role in the development of a child remains absent in the case of vulnerable children. All children are in the need of love and care, the absence and deficiency of which leads to severe retarded development in the child. Keeping this in view the teachers with the help of a smile, kind words, motivating actions try to bring the element of nurture back into their lives.
