How Are Diamonds And Graphite Related
Diamonds and graphite have the same chemical formula of pure carbon. It’s difficult to confuse one for the other, as the two have wildly different color, durability and availability. Their uses are also distinct. Graphite is commonly used for writing and industrial lubrication, while diamonds are admired as gemstones. However, the two minerals may be found entwined or echoing one another.
Carbonado is made of closely interlocked carbon crystals. Its hardness is a result of the diamonds which help make up the rock. The luster, crystal vacancies and trace nitrogen found within are also reminiscent of diamonds. Graphite is responsible for carbonado’s dark coloring and is finely mixed among the diamonds.
Sometimes graphite appears inside diamond crystals as inclusions. This frequently takes the form of clouds or single crystals. One diamond examined in 2015 by the Gemological Institute of America contained graphite inclusions in the outline of an octahedral diamond rough. This shape hints at the diamond’s journey from formation to delivery to the surface.
When diamonds rise to the earth’s surface, speed and pressure are essential. Diamonds and graphite require different conditions in order to take shape. If a diamond rises slowly under lower pressure, time and heat will eventually convert the stone into graphite. Pockets of graphite shaped like diamond rough have been found in the earth, hinting at this transformation.
