Galaxidi is a precious gem for the region of Fokida, a place with a majestic beauty that invites old admirers as well as new visitors every year. On the left side of the bay of Itea, lies this quiet town that offers moments of relaxation and tranquillity. Opinions on the name of this town are several and different. Galaxidi was a great naval state in the early 19th century that has now become one of the most beautiful traditional settlements in Greece. This ideal destination for relaxation is a quiet town with an atmosphere of a past era being diffused everywhere. In most corners of the city, you will see stone-built mansions that remind its wonderful past. Walking in the streets of Galaxidi will make you feel like you have travelled in time and landed to another era. Explore Galaxidi during your holidays and discover the best time and places to visit.

The first mansions were built in 1850, while many houses have ceilings designed by Italian painters. It is worth strolling around the area. Admire the architecture of this beautiful town and after enjoying your walk head by the sea and the main harbour. The glorious nautical past of the region has left its indelible marks. The glamorous sailing tradition of Galaxidi was preserved, as Galaxidi's sailing ships were true masterpieces and left their mark in Greek history and art. The main attractions of the historic city of Galaxidi worth visiting include the Church of Agios Nikolaos, the old School and the Nautical and Ethnological Museum, which is worth spending your time in order to see great exhibits. If you want to combine your visit to Galaxidi with more destinations, then you can also take a stroll in Amfissa, in order to have your pictures and impressions from one of the most beautiful and traditional corners of Greece. From Galaxidi you can also take day trips to Delphi and Arachova, they are very close.

Galaxidi has been characterized as a traditional village due to the rare architecture of the captains' houses. It combines a rich and long history with the natural beauty of the landscape, the picturesque alleys, the remarkable monuments and the beautiful mansions with their tiled roofs. In Galaxidi there are several archaeological sites, some of them unexplored, that you can visit. In the area of Kalafatis there are ruins of the Ancient City and tombs of the classical period. Close to the beach, there are parts of a wall that protected the ancient city as well as the tomb of Lokros, which is considered to be an early Christian catacomb. The village Agioi Pantes has ruins of an ancient marble fortress, on the hill Tsitomi and Ai Lia there are towers, while in the Penteroi area there is the "King's Palace", where various finds have come up from time to time. In the settlement of Tarsanades, the city's sailors were working when it was in the Maritime Acne. In this settlement, they continue to make the most beautiful keels of the country. At the beginning of Pera Panta you can see the ruined walls of the 4th century as well as carved graves. Apart from the Naval & Historical Museum which is a must-visit destination, there is also a Folklore Museum that will help you find out more about the town's history. In Galaxidi you will find beautiful landscapes ideal for walks. The nature lovers will adore routes like Tourla and Karkaria in Vounichora as well as the Cedar Forest in Vounichora, a unique natural monument. The path to the monastery of Sotiros is really beautiful, surrounded by a lush olive landscape.

During winter you will find 2-3 bars in the harbour to pass your evening there, most of them have a fireplace as well. They are not at all crowded, on the contrary, but the music is very good and the atmosphere is warm. The good news is that they stay open until the early hours... If you stay there, there is a canteen that offers sandwiches with home-made burgers and skewers. You can taste fresh fish, seafood appetizers, but also the famous "kontosouvli", kokoretsi and lamb at the picturesque taverns of Galaxidi. Don't forget to try the olives of Amfissa and the traditional yoghurt. Remember to buy some of the local products of the region, such as olives, organic olive oil, wine, honey, rusks, tsipouro etc. You also have to taste the homemade sweets "Almond" and "Ravani", they will definitely make your visit to Galaxidi even more unforgettable.

Alevromoutzouromata is one of the famous customs of Galaxidi that take place on Clean Monday (the first day of Great Lent throughout Eastern Christianity). This is a tradition initiated by the inhabitants of the naval state, and the idea of introducing flour milling came from sailors who travelled to Sicily and had seen similar customs in the area. This annual tradition is also known as the Flour War. Probably one of the best times of the year to head to Galaxidi, perfect season combination if you want to enjoy a bit of skiing on Parnassos Mountain nearby.
