Here is how a Slump Cone is used for Concrete Testing
by Hemant Sharma Digital Marketing ManagerOne of the most important
parts of concrete testing is the concrete
slump test which is done using a slump
cone. This test is done in order to check the workability of concrete. A
slump cone is a dependable concrete quality measuring instrument.
In construction industry, it
is necessary to ensure the compressive strength of concrete in order to avoid
corrosion in the long run and also to increase the life of the building
constructed.
A Slump cone also helps in
determining the concrete strength easily. Today, construction companies and
other testing laboratories can easily place order for slump cone online
at a comparatively lower price.
The term workability refers
to a complex property of concrete defined as the ease with which it can be
mixed, transported as well as placed in position within a homogeneous state.
Workability is dependent on several factors like the quantity of water,
aggregate grade as well as percentage of fine materials used in the concrete mix.
Many researchers have tried
with various parameters in order to measure the workability of the concrete.
They later found some of the tests which are very close in order to test the actual
workability of concrete.
The following tests are often
used for checking the workability of concrete:
The first step for the concrete slump test is to clean the
inner surface of the slump cone. It
has to be free from moisture content and adherence of any kind of old set
concrete. The next step is to place the Mould (Cone) on the metallic steel
plate or on any other smooth surface. Then, you need to checkout the cone with
concrete in four layers. Each of these cones needs to have an approximate
height of 1/4th of the mould.
Then, each layer is tamped 25
times by tamping rod. Take care to make sure you distribute the strokes evenly
over the cross section. After filling the 4th layer, the concrete has to be
struck off with the trowel. The mould is then removed from the concrete
immediately in a vertical direction. This is done by raising it slowly and
carefully, allowing the concrete to subside. This subsidence is termed as a
slump.
The next step is to measure
the height of the mould as well as the highest point of the slump. The
difference between the Height of the mould and highest point of the Subside
would give you Slump value. The height of the mould and the highest point of
the slump have to be measured. The difference between the Height of the mould
and highest point of the Subside would be the slump value.
The slump test comes with
some considerable advantages. Slump test procedure can be performed not only in
a laboratory but also at a construction site. Much less apparatus is required
when compared with many of the other tests. The results can also be evaluated
quite easily. Much time is not taken for evaluating the results.
It is important to make use
of the appropriate equipment when you do this test. A slump cone can be easily
bought online at affordable prices. Buying the apparatus online is usually much
more convenient nowadays when compared to buying it from a store.
There are a number of
websites, like Bellstone Online which sells slump cones and other useful
equipment online. In fact, Bellstone is one of India’s top online stores for industrial and construction equipment.
