The Hindi movie industry or Bollywood as it is commonly known as raked up a revenue of Rs. 3,700 – 3800 crores in the first three quarters of 2019 and looked unfazed by the economic slowdown that seemed to affect other parts of the country’s economy. This showed a huge increase from Rs. 3000 crores that were generated in the first three quarters in 2018. In 2019, as many as 13 films crossed the key Rs.100 crore mark as compared to the 10 in 2018.

With domestic box-office collections of ₹.299.05 crores, spy drama War was the highest grosser, followed by controversial romantic drama Kabir Singhat ₹.273.34 crores, war film Uri: The Surgical Strike ( ₹.244 crore), Salman Khan’s Bharat ( ₹.197.34 crore), Akshay Kumar’s Mission Mangal ( ₹.192.73 crore), and ensemble comedy Total Dhamaal ( ₹.150 crore). Besides, a bunch of smaller, content-driven offerings also made it to good box office collections, such as Gully Boy ( ₹.134 crore), Chhichhore ( ₹.139 crore), and Dream Girl ( ₹.123 crore), also made it to the ₹100-crore club.

All in all, it looked like that the Zoya Akhter Directed Super Hit movie “Gully Boy” was sweeping the stage with all the key awards going into the kitty of the people associated with it. While these honors were distributed on the stage, a lot of debate and trolling took place on social media. People were unhappy for Alia Bhatt having bagged the Best Actor Female award for her performance in Gully Boy, which users termed as an “extended cameo” and a“20-minute role”. Besides, the best lyrics also became a topic of discussion as many users thought that “Teri Mitti” from the movie “Kesari” deserved it more than Apna Time Aayega.

Televised awards have been a target of severe criticism and trolling for quite some time now and this year was no different with social media users even terming them as a “sham show” and “sellouts”. But that doesn’t change the fact that some good performances were awarded at the filmfare awards 2020 and the Bollywood news for the week is that Gully Boy has almost swept the award stage.
