Many people who like to bake or cook turn their passion into careers in the food industry. Like Guy Allan Davis, some choose to attain formal education and training in culinary courses, and after graduation turn to paid employment. As Mr. Davis has come to find out, there are many different places where a chef can put their skills to good use.

With your training and experience, you should apply for the best job possible. Keep in mind, also, that there is room for promotion in the chef ranks, so you can start small and work towards rising the ranks. Depending on where you work, you can gain a monthly salary or hourly pay and also be eligible for certain benefits such as health insurance, paid leave, life insurance, among many others.

Hotels and restaurants

In many restaurants, the executive chef can earn as $50,000 upwards, and in five-star hotels, they can command a six-figure salary annually. The hotel and restaurant industry offers a lot of room for growth, and there are many opportunities that you can use to gain experience. In a few years, you can work your way to becoming a master chef. At this level, opening your own restaurant is not out of the question.

Retail/ Catering field

In the retail/catering business, there’s an opportunity for you to open your own business with enough experience. Just like the hotel industry, this kind of environment exposes you to many learning opportunities, plus you can work at various kinds of events, including weddings and private functions. It’s a fun industry to work in, and the salaries are competitive as you grow in experience.

Public Sector

The public sector has the widest variety of locations to choose from. Depending on what you want, you can work in community centers, fire stations, hospitals, schools, prisons, rehabilitation facilities, and more. This industry has many opportunities for work, even though there may not be many levels of growth as the previous two industries.

While the public sector might not pay as well as working in a five-star hotel, it is a good place for young chefs to start their careers and gain the experience needed to transition to other fields. The public sector is also suitable for individuals who wish to serve their communities and still gain valuable experience.

Guy Allan Davis is a focused pastry chef and bread baker who’s worked in the food industry since 1999.
