GROOVING INTO THE TREAD
When was the last time you
grooved your way into the depth of the tread and got it checked?
Anything you do with your car, anywhere you go, it is a good set of
tyres that back you up. Tyres being the only area of contact between
the vehicle and the road, are of uttermost importance per se.
Steering, braking, being safe
on the road etc.- all of it requires your tyre to be in a good and
healthy condition. The safety factor associated with the tyres is
inevitable, and one should not be complacent about it as a major
portion of all the accidents that happen around us are mostly caused
due to the bad condition of tyres.
Know Your Groovy Rubber Pieces
If you want your tyre to
perform well on the road, you have to ensure that it has good
traction. A good grip on the road is a result of the friction between
the rubber and the road. If both the surfaces are craggy, it would
lead to higher friction which obviously results in better on-road
grip a.k.a. traction.
An even tyre would just work
fine on a normal day and dry road. But when it comes to rainy days
and wet roads, that is when the tyre grooves come into play. The
treads have grooves between them that have some spaces in between,
allowing water to pass by from below and keep the contact between the
tyre and the surfaces intact while avoiding any slippage. Similarly,
on roads with mud or snow, deep tread grooves work like a magic wand.
From all of this, we can conclude that deeper tread grooves result in
better traction.
However, even though the
grooves ensure that all the water/mud/snow passes out of the tyre, a
thin layer still sticks to the tyre. To resolve this issue, tread
blocks were introduced to a large number of more intricate grooves
called “sipes”.
So summing up the design of a good tyre, a tyre with a lot of grooves and sipes would be perfect.
Season Tyres to the Rescue
Speaking of tyres, there is a
huge display of a variety of them out there in the market. By now, we
know that a tyre is the most efficient only when it has the correct
tread. One of the most important features that should be the basis
for one to buy a tyre is weather or season. Seasonal tyres are one of
the most important types of tyre and should be kept in consideration
while making a purchase.
Speaking of treads, the tread design and pattern on season tyres is different for all the seasons, pertaining to their functionalities. We all are familiar with summer tyres, all season tyres, and winter tyres, all falling under the category of seasonal tyres. All these varieties are designed separately to function in different climatic conditions, on different kinds of surfaces. Using the wrong tyre in the wrong weather may cause unwanted results. For example, if you use a winter tyre that is meant for snowy areas on a dry road, the rolling resistance and fuel consumption would shoot up drastically.
The Design of the Tyre
When it comes to the design of
the tyres and treads, there are 3 major categories - symmetric,
asymmetric, and directional tyres. These categories have a different
tread pattern which is easily recognisable.
-
Directional tyres follow a chevron-like pattern that appears V in shape and can be identified easily.
-
Coming with a mark to the direction of rotation, these tyres can only be fitted in one way, and are hence known as unidirectional tyres.
-
Symmetric tyres are the standard, regular tyres which are cheaper than the others. The tread pattern is similar on both the halves, owing it to the name and thus, can be fitted in any direction.
-
Asymmetric tyres are like a hybrid tyre. The large and stiff tread blocks which help in turning around the corner is placed on the outside of the tyre, whereas the inner side of the tyre comes with an intricate groove pattern made to release water flow.
