St Bavo’s Cathedral - St Bavo’s Cathedral is located in the eastern part of the city. It is a massive Church made of brick and granite that is located on the spot of the Saint Jans Church. The church was given its present name by Charles V after he destroyed the old church to build a fortress in its place. It was completed in the late 13th century and 15th century. It has many important artworks on display including the The Altar of Ghent, more famously known as The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by the famous painter Peter Paul Rubens.
Gravensteen – Gravensteen is strong and beautifully built fortress surrounded by a moat by the river Lieve. Built in the late 11th and early 12th Century, this fortress was built by the Philip of Alsace, former count of Flanders, in a style resembling the Syrian crusader castles. Later in the 14th century it was used as a place of conducting administrative operations of the land. By the early 18th century it was converted to a cotton mill with flats for the workers.
Belfry of Ghent – The Ghent Belfry is situated to the west of the St Bavo’s Cathedral and is a 91 meter tall symbol of city’s independence. The spire of the Belfry is decorated by a gilded copper dragon and a wooden bell from the 14th century. A famous café-restaurant is a major attraction to the tourists.
