Geotecthnical Monitoring Systems – Innovating Geotechnology

by Brad Muller Marketing
A rather important part of geotechnical engineering, geotechnical monitoring systems are used mainly in all kinds of manmade structures and are manufactured in various different types from systems having a few channels to high end systems with over 100 channels. Customized geotechnical monitoring systems are also available in the market and there are many a companies which are into the design, installation and maintenance services for the same. These systems make use of various different sensors and instruments which help them through the monitoring process. Some of these equipments include sensors like inclinometer, peizometer, strain gauge, extensometer and more. These instruments are available on either rent or could be purchased as per requirement. Geotechnical monitoring systems are even more beneficial if they are used right from the initial phase of construction of any mega structure like dams, mines, railways, roadways, constructions, bridges, to name a few. This would help to create designs which are stable and more or less flawless and hence there would be less deterioration in the years to come thus saving a lot of your funds on maintenance purposes.

Geotechnical Monitoring – Geotechnical monitoring is useful in various different areas of engineering which includes construction also. At every stage of construction right from site supervision, the use of geotechnical monitoring is there. If there is any sort of problem with the design for that kind of soil, geotechnical monitoring systems detect it and suggest necessary changes in the design so that there are no problems with the stability. The damages which happen to the structure are more or less at the time of construction hence, geotechnical monitoring plays a significant role. Be it suggestions on speeding up the construction activity so that the completion happens before time and that too without affecting the quality of construction or be it keeping a check on the schedule of construction and seeing that the laborers are doing their work properly geotechnical monitoring does all that. It sends immediate alerts at the times of damage or incase of any potential hazard possibility is there, so that immediate evacuation procedure is carried out and preventive measures are taken.  Thus, geotechnical monitoring is more of a boon to geotechnical engineering.

Geophysical survey -     In geophysical survey, different sensing equipments are used for the purpose of getting geophysical data from above and below the earth’s surface for spatial studies. This study is done with the help of aerial, orbital or marine platforms. The different methods and techniques that are used in geo physical survey include electrical techniques, remote sensing techniques, electromagnetic methods, bore hole geophysics, aeromagnetic surveys, seismic tomography, and more.

Geotechnical services – There are various different companies which are into geotechnical services. They range from a few services to customized services and end to end ones too. So, depending on the requirement you could go for a few select services to full service which includes root to fruit services. Some of the examples of geotechnical services is risk and hazard management services, earthquake engineering, foundation engineering, engineering seismology, marine geotechnics, in-situ lab testing, permafrost engineering, to name a few.
