With potential customers spending more and more time on mobile phones and tablets, old-fashioned websites need to step into the present with responsive and mobile website designs.

People using mobile phones to connect to the Internet have grown in number from 55 percent in late 2011 to 65 percent by the end of 2013, according to Global Web Index. And going online via a tablet grew at an even faster rate—from just 12 percent up to 29 percent.

Those numbers indicate how many people a mobile website design can affect, but a Google Mobile Ads blog makes the impact even clearer, with 52 percent of mobile phone users saying a bad mobile experience would make them less likely to engage with a company.
From Old-Fashioned to New, Engaging Website Design
Websites that don't provide positive mobile device experiences clearly need to step into the future with new designs.

One example of a site that works well across platforms and devices is Flowershop.com, recently designed by leading web development company . Users accessing the site from any device are able to shop by occasion or flower and browse gift ideas and site information--with a similar look and feel on any device. This means the user can start the shopping process on their phone on the train on the way to work, continue it on their desktop once they get to the office and then complete the purchase on their tablet when they get home.

And sites are turning to responsive web design more and more for their efforts. A responsive web design provides your customers with consistent, satisfying experiences while also helping your company maintain its brand identity across devices--whether it's on a smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop or other device.

The digital magazine Ing.world puts the written word back into the spotlight, according to AWWWARDS, the awards for design, creativity and innovation on the Internet. That translates to a "clean design, perfect dosage of visual elements and an interaction model that makes it impossible to get lost."

Fitforaframe.com is an example of a great responsive website, according to Search Engine Journal. It offers simple navigation with a simple layout, but adds a special touch with prints on the homepage switching to a vertical layout when being viewed on a smaller screen.

Companies can also invest in separate mobile website design, which allows for the ability to design specifically for mobile user needs and quick site creation, also according to the Google Mobile Ads blog.

The National Lottery, for example, offers a clean mobile website that allows users to easily check the information they're looking for at a glance of their phone. Mobile users also are offered the option to go to the full website, if they prefer.

As more companies invest in responsive and mobile website design, a company's competitors could be beating them to the punch. It's time for old-fashioned websites that don't offer mobile experiences to get mobile or get left behind.
