A child’s brain develops very quickly in the first years of his life. Scientists are still unraveling secrets of this amazing organ but studies have revealed that food plays an important role in increasing your kid’s IQ levels. What we feed our kids has a big impact on their IQ levels and cognitive development.

Here are some foods that increase kids’ IQ:

1. Fish and Omega 3 sources: Children who were given Omega 3-rich foods have shown higher levels of IQ. Foods rich in Omega 3 are fish and seafood like mackerel, salmon, oysters, tuna and also nuts and seeds like walnuts, chia and flaxseed. Fish has plenty of omega-3 fatty acids which work to increase your kids’ IQ level.  In fact they strengthen the eye muscles as well.

2. Iron rich foods: Foods with iron content like lean meats, oysters, beans, tofu, spinach, sardines and fortified breakfast cereals can boost attention spans, IQ and the ability to concentrate in kids.

3. Green Vegetables: Vegetables which are green in colour like spinach, broccoli, collard greens, and kale, are full of vitamins A, C, B12, and calcium. These are great foods for your kids’ eye sight. But you have to be sure that you do not overcook them when you include them in your child’s diet.

4. Foods rich in B Vitamins and Choline:  Foods that contain folate, vitamin B-12 and choline help to keep your child’s brain healthy and help in their cognitive development. Ensure that your kids’ diet has fortified breakfast cereals, spinach, beef liver, rice, asparagus, black-eyed peas, Brussels sprouts and avocado-all of which contain folate. Also include animal-based foods to your child’s healthy meal plan as they are good sources of vitamin B-12. Beef, eggs, scallops, salmon, chicken breast, cod, shrimp, Brussels sprouts and broccoli are all good sources of choline as well.

5. Reduce salt: Cutting down salt from your child’s food helps in increasing his power of recall. His diet should ideally have only 1 tsp of salt per day.

6.  Avoid processed foods: Processed foods like biscuits, chips, cookies and snacks are full of dangerous trans-fats. They form thick, hard plaque deposits that clog arteries and cut the flow of oxygen flow to the muscles, heart and brain.  They also work against the brain cells by depriving it of omega fatty acids it needs to work properly.

7. Hydrate:  Water is vital for avoiding problems with learning, memory and overall wellness in your kids. If your child is well hydrated he will have increased cognitive ability, better moods, behaviour and concentration.

Make sure that your kid maintains a healthy diet as he grows up as this will help in increasing his IQ levels. Stay away from highly processed foods that are filled with trans-fats and sugars as it may result in lower IQs. Include a diet filled with wholesome food, fruits and vegetables and home cooked food to protect your child’s brain function and memory.
