Five Tips to Remember when Painting Your House Exterior
by Kamdhenu Paints Paints Manufacturers IndiaA home is a big
investment but if not kept in shape, the investment can quickly turn into a
slump. It is therefore advised by paint
manufacturers in India to paint the exterior of your house every few years
to protect it from the weather and other conditions. You can do the work
yourself or hire someone to do it. But here are some quick tips before you
begin the project.
1. Your
Preparation
Painting can be a messy
job whether you are hiring someone else to do it or are doing it on your own.
The secret to successfully painting the exterior of the house is preparation.
Investing some time in finding the right things, especially when you are painting
on your own, will save you regrets and money.
For a good paint job,
here are some things you will need: paintbrush, ladder, drop clothes, paint
scraper, primer, putty knife, exterior paint (semi-gloss or eggshell), plastic
sheeting, and sanding block. In addition, make sure that you cover the
surrounding ground, vegetation and bushes, furniture, vehicles, driveway, if
any. Use the drop clothes and cover these items well. In addition, cover all
light fixtures and windows which don’t need the painting.
2.
Sanding, Washing & Repairing
This next step is just as
important. Walk around the house and see whether there are any loose paint
areas, or any dust buildup. Even the best
exterior paints in India will not stick to a surface that is dusty or rough
surfaces. For this reason, you have to ensure that you wash, clean, scrap and
sand the surface before you proceed to painting. Scrape as much as is needed
and create a surface good enough for the exterior paint to adhere. Wherever
necessary use a sanding block or a paint scraper to loosen the old paint. After
this is done, allow the surface to dry.
You can also use a
pressure washer to do the job and for good coverage. Start from the top and go
all the way to the bottom for a smooth surface ready to paint. If you are
supervising a paint job, make sure the work is done thoroughly. This is also a
good time repair any damage by using a putty knife and filling in the holes or
cracks. Let the material dry and use a sanding block to seal the new layer.
3. Using
a Primer
Exterior house paint that is available in the market today comes with
added primer. These paints are usually expensive but they ensure that you don’t
have to apply multiple coatings on the surface. However effective this is,
adding an additional primer to your exterior house paint is always a good idea.
It ensures that the top coat of paint has better adhesion to the surface, in
turn increasing the durability of the paint. A primer is also essential as it
doubles the protection to the surface underneath against weather and other
conditions. Use a primer if there are any stains that need tending. This will
cover the stained parts. Make sure that you do some research to find out the
best ones available in the market.
4. Combine Different Cans into One
Have you seen a house
exterior which looks of different shades even though the paint used is the
same? This happens when people buy paints after different stages in painting.
In order to avoid this, you can do what the professionals do, “boxing the
paint”. Mix multiple cans of paint of the same colour into one large container
or paint bucket. Mix them thoroughly to even out the colour so that when you
are applying the paint on the exterior, you will have uniformity. If you later
on discover that you will need more paint of the same colour, keep adding the
new paint to this existing mixture for an even look.
After winding up work,
make sure that you seal the paint bucket with a rubber mallet. In addition, a
plastic wrap can be used to cover the opening. This keeps the paint mixture
from getting dry and wasted.
5. Start at the Top
This may seem as common
sense but it is one of the most important things to remember when painting.
Always start from the top then moving on to the bottom. Before applying the
paint to the broad surface, paint the sidings. In addition, brush from wet
surface to wet surface as this prevents any lap marks. When you are painting,
make sure that you are particularly careful about ladder safety. Do not try to
overreach as this severely compromises your safety. Any drips on the surface
can be handled if you start at the top and work in the direction of the
gravity.
