Painting your kitchen is a relatively easy task. Its canvas is more forgiving unlike that of the living room or bedroom. The limited wall space in a kitchen also relieves us from making mistakes and other struggles. However, painting a kitchen requires more cleaning and preparation work. If you are beginning your painting project, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1.     Kitchen Paint Colours

Choosing the right colour for the kitchen is equally important. This space, where your family spends considerable time, requires a sense of alignment, a touch of fusion. The top interior color trends in India suggest colours which align with the food being prepared commonly. The visual impact of a colour can also be taken into consideration to decide upon the colour. For instance, natural colours of foods add authenticity to a kitchen. On the contrary, colours like blue, because of a few blue foods, may tamper with the feel of the kitchen. Research also suggests that unnatural colours dull the appetite, something you would like to avoid in your kitchen.

2.     Kitchen Paint Finishes

If the different paint finishes are laid out on a spectrum with matte and glossy finishes at the ends, which one would you choose? The gradation of gloss matters more in the kitchen in comparison with other spaces. For instance, a flat, non-shiny matte finish would do little to hide the imperfections on the walls. Similarly, if you choose a glossy paint finish, you may find it difficult to clean the surfaces when they get stained.

To avoid these issues, a satin or semi-gloss paint finish would be the wiser decision. Not only can a semi-gloss finish cleaned easily, it will also cover up the imperfections. Alternatively, you can invest in washable emulsion paints.

3.     Sizing the Walls

Before beginning the painting project, you will need to understand the dimensions of the kitchen walls. If you are painting an empty kitchen space, begin my calculating the square footage of the walls. Multiply this number with the height and length of the room. Alternatively, you can do this calculation online. This simple number will help you determine your paint estimates.

On the contrary, if you are painting a modular kitchen, you would have less square footage to paint. In this scenario, it is best to begin by imagining the room as empty and buying just enough paint. The leftover can be used for touching up during the later stages.

4.     Clean Surfaces

The next step in painting your kitchen is to clean all surfaces that need painting. This is a relatively long process unless you have an empty kitchen. If this is not the case, you will need to pay attention to the areas above, below, and around the common kitchen appliances. To clean these surfaces, use tri-sodium phosphate (TSP) with warm water. Door trims can also be cleaned using TSP. The top walls will need dusting and removal of cobwebs. You can use a damp cloth and a vacuum to achieve this.

5.     The Right Tools

If you are painting an empty kitchen, you can use a paint sprayer or a roller. For painting the door and window trims, use a paintbrush. But if you are painting a finished kitchen, you should use a combination of a roller and a brush. The large wall expanses can be painted with a roller while the little strips of walls, door and window trims can be painted with a brush.

Spray painting requires more preparation time whereas roll-painting a wall could be additional days of painting. It is entirely your choice.

6.     Masking & Covering

This is another crucial step when painting a kitchen. Empty kitchen spaces are less work because any paint drips can be removed later. If you are spray painting, make sure that you contain the mist within the room.

For a finished kitchen, you will need to mask tape the window and door trims before painting. Additionally, lay out a drop cloth or a plastic sheet on the appliances, cabinets, and floor.

7.     Painting

If you have covered the steps mentioned above, the actual painting process will be easy.
