Fishing Jamaica Bay
On the southern portion of Long Island sits a brackish bay that is an important destination for many New Yorkers. Jamaica Bay, with a square area of thirty nine miles, is a body of water split between the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. The New York area offers residents and tourists alike many outdoor activities year round.

Charles Howard CallAHead grew up on the island of Broad Channel and spent his youth boating and fishing on Jamaica Bay. He enjoys spending time with his family fishing and teaching his five children the tricks of the trade. The area is known for its bountiful offering of flounder which are just one of the many species available for harvest. The beginning of the spring season also brings striped bass in abundant numbers to anglers. Many other species, such as fluke, weakfish, and bluefish also call Jamaica Bay home. In addition to the fishermen that troll the bay, there are also opportunities for crabbing. Nestled in the grimy mud and grassy areas of the water, blue claw crabs can be found in the spring when the water is warm.
Located along the shore of Jamaica Bay is a bait shack called Smitty’s Fishing Station, which has served the area for over 65 years. They pride themselves on being one of the largest fishing stations in the New York area with dozens of boats and motors available. Fishing Jamaica Bay is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the warmer months that the New York area has to offer. Whether you are a seasoned angler or looking for an outdoor adventure Jamaica Bay is the perfect location to get away and spend time on the open water.
