Epoxy resin floors: 6 key questions to get you out of doubt

by TM Maria Be a king in your own kingdom

One of the easiest ways to give your home a new look is to change the floor. At present, there are endless possibilities and models, and in fact, its diversity makes the fear of choosing a wrong model, cause us to always end up staying with the same options: tile or wood floors. But if you want to get out of the monotony and look for something different, choose this epoxy floor services and consider epoxy resin floors, also known as liquid porcelain. It is a self-leveling floor with a smooth and continuous finish (without joints)  that can be placed on an existing floor.

What kind of material is it?

The epoxy resin is a coating based on thermosetting plastic and when mixed with other chemical substances it hardens, making the epoxy resin perfectly level, smooth and without any roughness. This coating, which was once used only in industrial environments, is being successfully integrated into homes and also in places where hygiene is paramount, such as clinics, hospitals, restaurants, kitchens, among others.

What are its advantages?

The resin can quickly revitalize the old floor  and is widely used in homes due to these characteristics:

  • Absence of joints, ensuring the feeling of spaciousness and comfort

  • Ease of cleaning, smooth and homogeneous finish

  • High strength

  • Quick application

  • Excellent aesthetic finish, serving as waterproofing and non-slip

Where can it be applied?

It is applied in liquid form, creating a smooth and continuous layer that when it dries it hardens and becomes solid and resistant. Being a self-leveling floor, it can be applied in any area of the house and placed on existing floors. It works on surfaces of slate stone, natural stone, concrete, self-leveling mortar, ceramic or porcelain and has a thickness of 3 to 5 mm. Instead, you have to be more careful if you want to apply on wood since if it is not done correctly you can compromise the final result. The resin covers floors of indoor and outdoor areas, whether in residential or commercial environments.

How to use it?

Its finish can be matt or glossy and has a very strong smell. Once installed, you have to wait two days to step on it and up to seven days to place furniture on top. As for colors and finishes, it is available in:

  • solid colors (with an infinite color palette)

  • veined

  • metallic

  • drawings and compositions with photographs called 3D floors

Is it the same as epoxy paint?

Although both 'works' are made based on resin, it must be clear that these are different services and techniques. In fact, this has led many professionals to hire the service by mistake, thinking it was the same thing.

The main differences between the epoxy coating and the epoxy paint are thickness, strength, durability and the ability of the coating to correct corrugations and imperfections on the floor, ensuring a much better finish than the paint. Finally, the price for laying an epoxy resin floor can cost 4 or 5 times more than the paint.

What care do you need?

Before its application, it is important that a technician check the existing floor and solve all the problems that may exist. According to product manufacturers, the resin does not crack or flake and can be used even in the bathroom or in the kitchen.
