July 4 is one of the biggest holidays in Utah and across the United States. There are parades, fireworks, barbeques and vacations. With so many festivities to go to, there are many more people on the road than compared to a normal, summer day. Due to increased traffic, the first week of July is one of the deadliest for auto accidents on American roads.

Before Hitting the Road

Luckily, there are several things that can be done before the tires even hit pavement to help prevent auto accidents. Getting the car checked out by a shop or a trusted friend is always a good choice, especially for long distance trips. Make sure your vehicle has proper liquids and that your tires are good to go.

For those loading up a trailer or an SUV, tying up bags and trailers correctly is extremely important. An SUV with baggage on top has a higher center of gravity, which makes it more likely to tip. For top safety, pets should be secured inside of a crate or transportation device, too.

While Driving

These tips apply to any time that you drive, but they are especially important on the busy July 4 weekend. Drivers should buckle up. Putting on a seat belt automatically lowers the likelihood of an accident being fatal by 50 percent.

Speed limits should also always be observed, especially on crowded roads. Drivers should be alert and free of distractions like cell phones. These alone account for an astounding amount of auto accidents.

General Advice

Fireworks and grills are also used in large amounts over the weekend, from Utah to the East Coast. After arriving at your destination, fireworks should be lit with caution and only be responsible adults. Grills should be used with supervision, and those not tending to the meat should avoid the grill.

With these tips everyone in Utah and other states should be able to celebrate July 4 without any mishaps.
