DIY Guide to a Clean LCD Screen/Monitor
LCD screens that make up the displays of most computers, laptops, TVs and phones are made of glass which is prone to gather dust and smudges. Glass screens are fingerprint magnets which, no matter how much careful you are with them, will get smeared with several marks. These smudges are also the most difficult to wipe off, as they only tend to spread more when wiped with dry cloths. One common mistake that people do to clean screens is that they use off-the-shelf cleaning products like Colin Sprays that may contain ammonia or alcohol. Let’s be clear that it is absolutely unsafe to clean monitors with these sprays. There are a few other ways using which you can clean the LCD screens properly without damaging them.
The first precaution that you should take while cleaning the screen (laptop, phone or TV) is to turn it off. This will eliminate the risk of shock or other electrical damage, in case something goes wrong. To be on the safe side, plug off the whole system. Since, there will be moisture involved in the cleaning, you’re better off preventing liquid coming in contact with the electrical parts.
Find a clean and soft cloth for cleaning the screen (anything made of cotton). Dampen it with water, just enough so the cloth is moist and not leaking water if pressed slightly harder. As for the liquid, don’t use anything other than water, especially ammonia- and alcohol-based cleaners that can ruin the LCD. If the impurities are a little hard to get off, then you can use a homemade solution yourself that will get the job done. Prepare a 50/50 solution of distilled water and white vinegar. This solution will remove the most stubborn dirt accumulations.
Fill up the solution in a bottle with a spray nozzle for ease of use. Don’t commit the mistake of spraying the liquid directly on the screen, as the excess liquid will quickly trickle down the screen and reach the bezel where it can seep in right through to the electrical mechanism. This method will surely do some water damage to the machine. What you can do alternatively is that you can spray the liquid on the cloth first, and then wipe the screen with it. While wiping, follow a circular motion to avoid streaks and scratches and apply light pressure.
Finally, let the screen air-dry itself for a few minutes. The air will soak up any remaining moisture soon. After the screen is completely dry, then take a clean and dry cloth to gently wipe the surface to give it one final rub for removing any leftover residue. Plug the device back in and enjoy the crystal-clear display in all its glory.
Cleaning a screen can be tricky, but with the method stated above you can efficiently clean any LCD monitor within 10 minutes and without doing any unseen damage to the device.
