The decision to seek treatment at drug rehab centers comes at a personal crossroads. Unfortunately, many people prolong the decision to seek treatment because of the myths surrounding rehab and treatment approaches.

Nonetheless, research shows the sooner an individual seeks treatment, the easier it is to break the addiction. Here are some of the most common myths about drug and the facts that dispel them.

Putting My Life on Hold

Recovery.org, an online source of educational information about rehab, says two of the most common myths surrounding treatment at drug rehab centers are: By choosing to go to rehab you have to put your life on hold; and if you go to rehab you’ll lose your job. In reality, a variety of options exist to prevent patients from losing employment while undergoing treatment — such as FMLA, Vacation Time or Employee Assistance programs.

Additionally, Recovery.org says there are several types of rehab programs, including outpatient, which allows for the patient to return home each day to his or her personal responsibilities. Another misconception is the belief that drug rehab centers are too expensive. However, Medicaid, Medicare and many health insurance companies help cover the cost of treatment.

Too Old for Treatment and ‘Rock Bottom’

Other myths about rehab are: Programs force religion upon patients; treatment doesn’t last; you have to hit “rock bottom” before you can go to rehab; and I’m too old for treatment, notes Recovery.org. In actuality, many treatment centers don’t utilize a religious-based approach to recovery and treatment is as effective as the work you put into it.

Finally, you are never too old to seek treatment and you don’t have to hit rock bottom to enroll. Drug rehab centers offer programs for a variety of ages and research shows the sooner you seek treatment the easier it is to recover.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse says that successful treatment includes both medical and health services offered at treatment facilities as well as family and community support in recovery. Regardless of what you’ve heard, successful treatment is possible at drug rehab centers.
