by L&P Global Wine & Olive Oil Exporter

A staple in Mediterranean countries, many nutritionists and dieticians promote the use of olive oil because of its health benefits.

However, when it comes to fat consumption, many are still confused about which kind of olive oil is healthier, and which is not.

Simply put, olive oil is just oil extracted from the olive fruit, but the difference between the kinds of olive oils is not the variety of raw materials used, but the kind of process they undergo.

To know the variety of olive oil you should use according to your need, here’s a comprehensive guide for you:

oils

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Extra virgin olive oil is the highest and most premium variety of olive oil. It has a high count of chlorophenols which makes it one of the healthiest fats to consume.

EVOO is not ideal for deep frying because it doesn’t have as a high smoke point compared to other vegetable oils.

EVOO is commonly used and is best for:

Salads – a splash of extra virgin olive oil on your salad does not only make it fancier, it makes it super healthy and delicious too!

Dip – Hummus is delicious, but drizzling EVOO on top of it makes it a lot tastier.

What about Virgin Olive Oil?

The difference between virgin olive oil and extra virgin olive oil is very simple. When the extracted oil from olives have no flaws, fruity and has a free acidity that is equal to or less than 0.8, it’s extra virgin

While an olive oil that has a free acidity of equal to or less than 2.0m with minimal flaws, then it is graded as a virgin.

Pure Olive Oil

To be clear, pure oil is not a fake olive oil. It’s just it has a mixture of refined olive oil and extra virgin olive oil where chemicals are used to remove the flaws of the fruit. It has also the same benefits, but pure olive oil has a smoke point of 390⁰ - 470⁰, a lot higher compared to EVOO. It is also cheaper compared to EVOO.

Pure olive oil is a great substitute for vegetable oil because of its neutral flavor. Thus, it can be used as all-purpose cooking oil.

You can use pure olive oil for sautéing and roasting. Using pure oil will make the meat more aromatic and will add a premium taste to the food too! When roasting and grilling, pure olive oil can give it a delicious golden brown look.

Olive Pomace Oil

We have heard of olive oil soap, moisturizer, and even furniture shiner. The use of olive oil for industrial purposes is increasing making the industrial olive oil supplier busy, but what kind of olive oil do they use?

This is where pomace olive oil comes into the picture. Pomace olive oil is the oil extracted from the olive pulp. It is notably cheaper compared to the other varieties of olive oil.

On the side note, using olive pomace oil for cooking is not advisable because of the presence of solvents during the process.
