Different Types of Surrogacy: A Quick Look
Surrogacy is all about
intended parents having issues in bearing child reaching out to a woman or a
surrogate who carries their baby for a full-term and then relinquish it to the
intended parents on delivery. There are two main types of surrogacy:
gestational and traditional.
Traditional Surrogacy:
This type of surrogacy
costs far lesser but it not a preferred option. In the process mother is
impregnated with the semen from intended father who is also a sperm donor so
the surrogate mother is related genetically to the child. This insemination
process is conducted at home using an insemination kit and can be performed in
a fertility clinic.
Gestational Surrogacy:
Another more popular
method that only the best
surrogacy clinics in India use is Gestational surrogacy. The process
involves IVF or in vitro fertilization with the eggs of intended mothers or
those of the egg-donors. The arrangement is done in vitro and hence the
surrogate is not related to the child genetically. The method is more intricate
in the medical terms and hence it tends to be more expensive than the
traditional forms of surrogacy. The method is much effective also.
There are three stages of
gestational surrogacy primarily.
Egg Donation:
The first and the foremost
step is the egg donation in which either the egg donor or the intended mother
undergoes the procedure of egg retrieval.
Fertilization:
Eggs are fertilized with
semen in the lab for the purpose of creating embryos.
Transfer:
Embryo or the fertilized
eggs are implanted into the womb of surrogate mother which is referred as
embryo transfer or transfer.
A fertilized egg is then
transferred to the surrogate either when it is 3-5 days past fertilization or
once it has taken from the cryogenic storage and melted. For a fresh embryo
transfer, the egg donor or the intended mother and the surrogate must take take
hormone pills simultaneously so as to synchronize their cycles. There are
situations when embryos are thawed, the surrogate should take hormone
medication that prepares the lining of uterus for embryo transfer.
Success rate of IVF
depends on certain factors like age and health of the egg donor or a surrogate.
Independent Surrogacy:
Much like the traditional
form of surrogacy, independent surrogacy is fraught with legal risks. An
independent surrogate works without any support or endorsement of any agency.
It is important to
remember that surrogacy is an intricate process and hence going alone proves to
be too difficult. Right from the medical decisions to the insurance to
compensation, a reputable agency runs by the expert can find a suitable
solution even for the most challenging circumstances.
Both gestational as well
as traditional surrogacy is safe but surrogate mother should undergo a thorough
health screening prior to that.
Surrogacy in India:
From nearly two decades,
commercial surrogacy is legal in India. India is a major center of surrogacy
both for the international as well as the domestic intended parents. Cost of
surrogacy in India includes medicine, diagnostics, disposables, surrogate and
normal delivery. If you wish to find cheap surrogacy
