Different Types of Hair Extensions

by Rob J. Quality Links

Extensions aren't only for people who weren't born with perfect hair. Others prefer to use them for several reasons. Maybe they're going to a special event and want to wear their tresses long but had them cut a few weeks ago. Or, perhaps they feel like wearing bangs just for today. They could also fancy curls but refuse to damage their locks with curling irons. If you're one of them, you'll be happy to learn you have plenty of options.

Hair extensions come in different types. They also vary in application techniques and the time it takes to put them in place. Continue reading to discover what these variants are.

Clip-In

This is made up of strands that are attached at the bottom with silicone or fabric. The base is connected to a clip that you can use to snap the product onto your natural hair. Depending on how thick your tresses are, it should take somewhere around 5-15 minutes to apply. Unclip it after use and store it for next time.

Tape-In

These extensions are pre-taped and glued together on either side of your locks. You need a hairdresser to ensure they're perfectly aligned with your roots to make them look like real tresses. They're then heated with a tool that melts the glue so it sticks to the base of your hair. This procedure takes anywhere from 40 minutes to 1 hour to complete. A special solution is used to remove them, and the process has to be repeated for every reapplication.

Sew-In

Weave hair extensions are generally used by people with thick hair. They're applied by first braiding your locks into cornrows. A needle and thread are used to sew the artificial tresses to the braids. It's a technical job best performed by an expert. Popular among users, it's the most seamless and permanent variant. The wig comes in one piece and is sewn into your natural mane. It has to be professionally removed after use.

Microlink

Also known as micro bead or micro loop, it's applied by attaching mini wefts to tiny sections of your natural mane with silicone-lined beads. A special tool is used to secure and tighten them. Because hairdressers only work on small areas at a time, it takes them 2-4 hours to finish a full head of adult hair.

Wigs

Easily the most popular type, wigs are topically applied and can be safely worn by anybody. They're meant to cover the entire head and don't require the help of a hairdresser. Small add-on hairpieces in the shape of ponytails, buns, or ties are other options that can be placed only on certain sections.

There are many quality brands of extensions you can choose from, like Bohyme Brazilian Hair. They have their strengths and weaknesses, so picking one is ultimately up to you. Check them out to see which products look best on you and which one you're most comfortable using.
