Like any kind of pain that our body suffers when it comes to musculoskeletal system, back pain too has different types. It is also of the utmost importance that you know what these types are as this will help you seek help and assistance at the earliest whilst also making sure that you receive the right treatment for the specific kind of back pain you might be facing. So, what are these different kinds of back pain do you ask? Well, read on.

We are sure, that as many of you might have already personally experienced, back pain happens to be a very complex and difficult issue to diagnose. This is essentially due to the fact that there are a lot of different types of back pain. Hence, unless and until one can diagnose exactly the kind of back pain that you might be suffering from, the treatment becomes more of a trial-and-error process until the proper course is determined. In order to make the whole experience easier for you so that you may seek out the best treatment for back pain, here are a few things to remember and the most common types of back pain that people tend to suffer from.

Management

Back pain is unique to every person, especially when one comes to talk about the manageability and the intensity of the pain itself. Something as simple as a muscle in the back could very well cause one person excruciating pain while another person can barely end up feeling it at all. The same thing can be said for people suffering from issues like a herniated disk as well. So, keeping this in mind, it goes without saying that a treatment, that works for one person, need not work for another person at all. It could even end up proving counter-productive to someone else. Thus, advanced physical therapy comes into play!

You see, back pain is an extremely tricky issue, as sometimes it tends to flare up like nobody’s business and on other days it is like a dormant volcano! However, if left untreated, it will, without a doubt, worsen over time. This is why, when you decide to opt for that lower back pain treatment or the likes, you need to be extremely vocal and active, so that you are able to communicate with your physiotherapist the best you can!

What causes pain in the back

Throughout the course of a day, your back goes through a lot to support you. Even in your daily activities the strain that your back goes under cannot be compared to other parts of the body. Whether it be a sudden jolt from picking something off the ground or even cloying up and down the stairs to bad posture when sitting and working. All this puts a combined pressure on the various structures of the back. There are a lot of structures that, when combined, forms your back, and since there are many, even if one of them gets strained, the chances of back pain occurring are always higher.

Here are some of the structures that can cause back pain.

  • Intervertebral discs: These are discs that help in providing shock absorption to the bones
  • Large Muscle structures: These help to support the spine
  • Spinal Nerves: These are nerves that the spinal column consist of and that travel to the legs upon their exit from the spinal canal.
  • Facet Joint: These are the joints that help connect the vertebrae at the back of the spine.
  • Bones, ligaments, tendons are also a part of the spinal structure and these too can end up causing back pain when strained

The different types

Instead of providing particular names to different back pains, they are usually classified and addressed according to its area of distribution. So, keeping that in mind, here are the three basic kinds of back pain.

Radicular pain:

One can easily recognise radicular pain as it feels like shock-like or even a burning, searing kind of pain, right along the path of the spinal nerve whilst it exists the spinal column. This pain could be caused when the spinal nerve root is either compressed or inflamed. When this kind of pain is in the lower back, it could very well travel to the legs as well. This kind of pain is also commonly known as sciatica.

Axial Pain:

Axial pain is the pain one feels in the back but is usually felt only at one spot or location. This kind of pain does not travel and is also known as mechanical pain. This kind of pain manifests in many forms and you can end up feeling anything from a simple throbbing pain or a constant one! Of the many things that could cause pain that is axial in nature, a muscle tear or a tear in the discs is one!

Referred Pain:

This kind of pain is one that feels achy and dull and seems to travel all over the back. The pain itself could potentially vary in intensity. One of the most common examples of referred pain is the pain that one feels when they are suffering from a degenerative disc disease.

It is of extreme importance that your physiotherapist and your doctor are able to diagnose the kind of pain you are suffering from as this will help them determine the further course of action, they should be taking to treat you the best. Hence it is always better to be aware about the kind of pain that you are suffering from so that you and your doctor together can reach a consensus and make you heal quicker.
