Different Dog Training Methods In Use

by Shelmar Kennels Owner

Dog training is nothing but applying behavioral analysis and uses the environmental events, including antecedents and consequences, and modifies the behavior of the dog. There can be several reasons for us to get a dog trained. This mean the dog can be trained for assisting the owner in specific activities or it can perform certain tasks it has been taught. It can even become a responsible family member if it is taught well in that aspect. While Romans used to train dogs as well, the present day concept of dog training evolved around 1950.Dogs tend to learn the interactions it has with any environment. This can be achieved by using classical conditioning where the dog learns the relation between two stimuli. There are also non-associative stimuli where the dog learns mostly from habituation or sensitization. Finally, there is operant conditioning where the dog is taught to learn the relation between cause and effect.

There are several methods to train a dog well and each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages. Some of the methods are, however, better known like Kohler method, dominance based training, relationship-based training, clicker training and negative reinforcement. There are, however, a few common things about every successful method. These common attributes of successful training methods are accurate timing of reinforcement or punishment, understanding the personality and attributes of the dog and also having consistent communication. The training does only one thing, the dog is taught to respond to commands. They are taught to do things which are not natural for a dog to do generally. The training program also modifies the natural tendencies of the dogs like barking, digging and eliminating behavior. That is why, training a dog is often called purposefully changing the behavior of a dog.

There are different purposes behind these trainings as well. It can be simply for domestication purpose, or for dog obedience training which helps law enforcement, hunting, assistance to people with disabilities, search and rescue, working with livestock, dog sports, protecting people and property and entertainment.Individual training is also preferred for dogs which have any special problem or trait such as fear, aggression or similar problems, biting, hyperactivity, walking difficulties, insecurity, excessive barking, separation, inappropriate elimination and destructive behavior. These special trainings are provided by dog obedience training in Houston by experienced trainers.Class training might come cheaper, however, and often it is preferred if the dog doesn’t have any special need.
