Fact 1: Coffee is actually a fruit
Coffee beans are actually the pits of berries. The coffee berries, also called coffee cherries are edible fruits that have coffee beans in them. The reason they are called beans is because they appear like beans.
Fact 2: The only state in the USA to commercially grow coffee is Hawaii
As coffee is better suited for equatorial climates, most of the states in the USA are not suited for the cultivation of coffee. The only exception to this situation is Hawaii which has a good climate for harvesting java beans. In addition, Hawaii is known for its Kona coffee which has a good export rate and is popular all over the world.
Fact 3: Their is a legend associated with the discovery of coffee
According to a legend, coffee was discovered by Ethiopian shepherds when they noticed that some of their sheep become more active when they nibbled on bright red berries. The shepard therefore took some of these berries to an Islamic monk who disapproved its use and threw them into the fire. This resulted in an enticing aroma as the coffee bean was roasted, which was then dissolved into a cup of hot water, thereby producing the world's first cup of coffee.
Fact 4: King Charles II of England banned the sale and consumption of coffee
In the late 1675, King Charles II, banned the sale and use of coffee which had become very popular among the elite people of Britain. As a result a number of coffee clubs were formed where people used to come together to discuss various topics like philosophy and politics. King Charles II was afraid that these discussion would lead to dissent and therefore took the decision to ban them. However before this ban could take effect, it was withdrawn.
Fact 5: Drinking coffee has a host of health benefits
More and more research is emerging which proves that drinking coffee has various health benefits. From helping prevent diabetes to lowering the risk of liver disease, coffee also prevents Parkinson disease and lowers the risk for heart disease.
Fact 6: The biggest producer of coffee in the world is without doubt Brazil
Brazil has for more than 150 years remained as one of the world's largest coffee producer. In fact, in 2011, Brazil produced nearly twice as much as coffee as Vietnam and Colombia combined. This was almost a third of all of the coffee produced in the entire world. In addition, Brazil is also one of the few countries in the world that grows Arabica and Robusta beans both. It is therefore no surprise that coffee exports contributes to a major share of the economy of Brazil.
Fact 7: A major commodity for trade in the world is coffee
After oil, coffee is the most traded commodity on the planet. In fact coffee consumption is a very much a good thing for developing countries as almost 90 per cent of it is produced in the developed world like Asia, Africa, South America, Central America and the Caribbean. In short, coffee trade is good medium of exchange between developed and developing countries as most of the coffee is consumed in the developed countries.
