Determining the Right DEF Storage

by Kevin Smith Author

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is a delicate liquid that requires proper storage to make sure it is accessible and to prevent it from evaporating in the summer or freezing in the winter. There are several different directions that DEF packaging can take, so it is important to be aware of some variations and what they can accomplish for you or the business you work for. You also need to know where to put the container and what size it should be for both convenience and safety purposes.

Gallon Bottles

Smaller gallon bottles tend to be an easy pick for most drivers that use this fuel. All they have to do is go to the gas station, fill it up, and then refill the tank once it starts getting empty. It is accessible, easy to carry and can go anywhere. The downside is that the smaller size means you will be making frequent trips to the gas station depending on how often you drive the vehicle that requires DEF. It can also be easy to leak with the large entry hole and how people often pour it rather than hook it up to a device that transfers the liquid. The bottles can come in several sizes depending if the user wants more fluid in the container or an easier time carrying it.

Diesel Drums

Larger drums are popular picks for drivers that want storage in their garage for a long time. All they need is a pump and a safe platform and the garage becomes their own personal gas station. It is also much more durable than the other options and less likely to leak fluids. The downside is the awkward circular shape can make it difficult to find a proper place for in the garage, and you have to be careful that there are not hazardous tools and materials that could set it off nearby. It is arguably the most difficult to transport as having it on the side will cause it to roll around and getting it to stand upright might have some height problems.

IBC Totes

IBC totes are a type of DEF packaging that can hold significantly more DEF than the other products and is sometimes placed on the vehicle itself if the machine is large enough. They offer an opening for the pump on different sides and the cage can make them easier for multiple people to carry or place upon a cart to roll. As expected, the biggest downside is that the heavier load can make it much more difficult to transfer and this is typically reserved  for much larger vehicles to get the full effect.
