Delhi government Switch Delhi Campaign: Will it bring notable change?

by Mansi L. Be happy

Delhi, like many other cities in India, faces severe air pollution issues, primarily caused by conventional vehicles. With the increasing concerns of air pollution and climate change, the government is grappling with the challenge of finding more efficient modes of transportation.

In this lieu, the government of the National Capital Territory launched the Switch Delhi Campaign in 2020 and it is a significant step towards promoting sustainable mobility that has become paramount.

The campaign is an ambitious initiative aimed at encouraging the adoption the electric vehicle and making Delhi the EV capital of India.

The goal of the Switch Delhi campaign is to sensitise and educate people of the city about the benefits of electric vehicles, create a conducive ecosystem for its adoption, and accelerate the transition towards sustainable mobility.

The campaign aims to highlight how EVs can significantly reduce air pollution by producing zero tailpipe emissions, thereby improving air quality and reducing the health risks associated with high air pollution levels. Another crucial aspect of the Switch Delhi Campaign is to create an enabling ecosystem for EV adoption. The campaign focuses on building the necessary charging infrastructure to support the growing demand for EVs across the city.

The Delhi government has rolled out a plan to install charging stations at strategic locations in Delhi. To attract more consumers, the government has offered Delhi govt electric vehicle subsidy like waiving registration charges and road tax.

To support the adoption of EVs, Tata Power-DDL is actively supporting the initiative and is building EV charging infrastructure in its licensed area. To get the installation of an EV charging point a consumer can apply for the installation of an EV charging point from the Tata Power-DDL portal or can call Tata Power-DDL Sampark Kendra @19124 to submit their request. A consumer must spend a total of Rs. 2500 for a charging point to be installed after the submission of the request.

Tata Power-DDL is committed to supporting and developing sustainable business models as vehicular emissions have been a major concern in the national capital.

The campaign has also set an example for other cities in India in promoting sustainable mobility as a solution to combat air pollution and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
