Defining the True Meaning of a Soft Mattress

by Pankhil Desai Mattress Expert
Want to shop that perfectly soft mattress just like in hotels? Shopping for a mattress can be tedious if you cannot differentiate between ‘softness, support and firmness’. Everybody likes to sleep on a soft mattress but does it provide the type of support your body needs? A mattress that fits your body type may not provide the same comfort to the other person no matter how soft it may be. Major factors that contribute in choosing an ideal mattress that suits your body are – sleeping pattern and the body weight of an individual. Moreover, environmental factors also affect the kind of mattress one must choose.

Let’s focus on few considerations that will educate us about selecting the perfect soft mattress keeping in mind the factors mentioned above. We will also explore the true meaning of a soft mattress. And, what kind of people benefit the most out of it.

Decoding Support and Firmness

Support and firmness are two different entities. What plays a key role in buying a perfect mattress that suits your requirements is ‘Support’. The mattress should support your spine and keep it properly aligned while you doze off dreamily. It should relieve pressure points for a relaxed sleep. If the mattress fails to pull that off, it can emanate serious back aches. You would be left tossing and turning restlessly whole night. Therefore, a support is defined by how evenly your body weight is being distributed by the mattress.

Firmness, on the other hand, is defined by how hard or soft one feels while lying on a mattress. A very soft mattress can provide the cuddly feeling that most of us require. However, it may aggravate spinal problems if you already have one. Too firm a mattress? It may also create pressure on joints, which again is not fruitful.

Is Soft Mattress Ideal for You?

Mattresses generally come in three types: soft, medium and firm.

People who like soft mattress can opt for memory foam if they like to sleep like a baby. But, stay away from sinking memory foam if you get overheated at night or have back problems.

Memory foams give the ultra-soft feel and sink according to the shape of one’s body. It is an ideal choice for side sleepers as it supports the curves and contours of our body perfectly hugging us from beneath. Sleepers who lie down on their stomachs should rather avoid buying a soft mattress as it may not support the mid-section thereby creating pressure on lower back.

Body weight also defines if a soft mattress will be good for you or not. If you are lean and weigh less than 150 pounds, the soft mattress would rather comfort you better than the medium or firm mattress. This is so because medium to firm mattress require high pressure to sink down and relieve pressure points. A frail body cannot create as much pressure as a heavy bodied person. Softer mattress provides better comfort for such sleepers.

Best for people who feel cold all the time, be it winters or summer. Soft mattress absorbs and retains heat providing a warmth that your body requires while sleeping. It relaxes your joints and pressure areas producing heat and you feel like sleeping in a mother’s lap. However, people who face a problem of overheating during the night should certainly avoid buying extra soft mattresses.

Do You have a Back Problem?

Those who suffer from backaches must choose a medium i.e. slightly firm mattress which will support their back with the firmness yet providing the much-needed softness to let you cuddle in that bed.

Hope by now you must have acknowledged the fact that it is very important to know your requirements and what you expect from a soft mattress. Knowing exactly how soft the mattress should be according to your sleep pattern, lets you make a right decision. So choose wisely for that good night’s sleep!
