Daylight Saving – Top Energy Saving Tips For Around the Home
Saving energy helps save the
conservation of the environment, and if that’s not enough, it can save you a
pretty penny too. Here we discuss a range of hints and tips to help you save
energy around the home.
We all know the obvious ones, turning
down your heating by 1C or 2C and wearing extra clothing to save money on
heating oil, hanging up your laundry instead of sticking it in the dryer,
switching off power outlets instead of putting TVs/Computers on standby… But
what about the more inventive, interesting ideas for saving energy? Which of
course in turn, saves you money.
Well how about these energy saving
ideas…
1. Get free electricity
Wait, did you just say free...? Yes,
yes I did. Free electricity - no
installation or maintenance cost; simply no-strings-attached free power. Now
all you have to do is apply for the government’s feed-in tariff solar panel
scheme, where installers get paid for the energy generated, so they can install
them for free.
2. Let
the sun shine
This
may sound obvious, but this is a tip often unused by homeowners. On a sunny
day, just opening your curtains will let the warmth come in to your house. But
ensure as it gets darker you close them up to keep the heat from escaping.
3. Don’t
forget the fridge
If you regularly defrost fridges and
freezers, it will vastly improve their efficiency. A build-up of ice in the
freezer reduces its effectiveness. And by never putting hot food directly in
the fridge, and moving fridges and freezers as far away from heaters and
cookers as you can, this will increase the durability and overall efficiency of
your fridge.
4. Take
the shower
Over
20% of a typical gas heated household’s heating bill comes from heating
water. This could be for baths, showers and hot water from the tap. So taking
the quick shower option instead of a long soak in the bath will not only save
both energy and money for you water bill, but your heating too.
5. Use
the microwave
Using a microwave to cook food really can help save you money as
they only use just 20% of the energy that is used to run a standard
oven.
6. Use Premium
kerosene
Premium kerosene works by stabilizing fuel which keeps it fresher, for longer.
By reducing carbon and sludge build-up it will help improve the efficiency of
your heating oil, and therefore will help in cutting back utility costs.
