                Infertility is an inability to achieve pregnancy after a year of marriage with regular unprotected sex. Mainly, there are two types infertility i.e. primary and secondary. Primary infertility means a couple has never conceived a child whereas secondary infertility is facing difficulties in conceiving a second child. In order to cope with infertility, it is important to understand the cause of infertility. Understanding the cause will help you to get appropriate treatment. When infertility comes to our mind, our doubt goes on woman only but the fact is males too have infertility issues. If you are trying to conceive for more than a year and getting failures then you need to consult a doctor. You or your partner might be suffering from infertility issues and without knowing it. This condition affects around 10% of couples during their reproductive ages. Around one third infertility cases have the contribution of females while one-third with the man and one third with either or both the partners. In certain cases, the cause of infertility is never found which also known as unexplained infertility. Development in medical science has discovered ways to cope with infertility. There are various causes that affect both male and female infertility. Following causes will be discussed further.

Male infertility:

Male infertility refers to the inability of a man to cause pregnancy in a fertile female. Among all infertility cases, 40% is contributed by the malefactor. There are various causes of male infertility which are mentioned below:

·         Sperm count, motility and morphology: If the number of sperm are low in semen can decrease the chances of fertilization with egg. Low sperm is fewer than 15 million per ml of semen. If the movement or function of sperm is not normal then it will not reach to partner’s egg. However, sperm health is very important when it comes to fertilization with egg.

·         Medical causes: Number of health issues is responsible for male infertility. For instance, varicocele is swelling in veins which drain the testicles. Due to this condition, the sperm count may be reduced. Besides this, the infection can also responsible for male infertility. There are some infections that can interfere with the production of sperm. It consists of epididymis or testicles or STD’s. Though some infections can result in permanent testicular damage.

·         Health, lifestyle and other causes: These factors play an important role when it comes to male infertility. For instance, alcohol consumption, eating tobacco and drug usage can affect the quality and quantity of sperms. Though with the help of recommending treatments it is easy to cope with male infertility.

       Female infertility:

                Female infertility is the inability of a female to conceive a child. The most common cause of female infertility includes issues with ovulation, damage to fallopian tubes, and problems with the cervix. Age is another factor that may affect the fertility of a female. There are some common causes of female infertility are mentioned below:

·         Damage fallopian tubes: Blocked or damaged fallopian tube keeps a sperm and egg away from uniting. Due to which the fertilized egg doesn’t pass into the uterus. There are some common causes of tube damage are pelvic inflammatory diseases, previous surgery, and pelvic tuberculosis.

·         Ovulation disorders: Ovulation disorders mean either you ovulates infrequently or not at all. Around 1 in 4 infertile couples account for infertility due to this issue. It may cause due to issues like PCOS, hypothalamic dysfunction, premature ovarian failure or increased prolactin.

·         Endometriosis: This condition arises when the tissue develops outside the uterus normally in fallopian tubes or pelvic parts. This can affect the lining of the uterus which disrupts implantation of the fertilized eggs. If you are struggling with any of the mentioned cause then it is easy to cope with female infertility with treatments.

Treatments

                In order to cope with infertility among men or women various treatments are available. Male infertility treatments include surgery, treating infection, hormone treatment, medication and assisted reproductive techniques. In a rare case, male infertility treatments cannot be treated which makes impossible for a man to become a father. In such a case, the doctor may suggest donor sperm or adopting a child. In the case of female infertility, fertility drugs are the main treatment if it occurs due to ovulation problem. Apart from this, in some cases, surgical methods are also adopted to improve infertility problems in the female. If she is facing difficulty in conceiving then treatment like IVF or IUI is recommended.
