Conducting safety checks on Industries- Industrial Hygiene
Everything that happens in the world has consequences. This domino effect ensures that the state of nature remains balanced and no particular race goes too far ahead in terms of supremacy. This domino effect also comes into play in the matter of development. With the advancements in science, machines are taking over for humans and the productivity of work has gone through the roof as a result. These machines, sometimes large, bulky and costly need to be taken care of and as advanced as they are, they cannot operate themselves.
Therefore humans are employed to take care of these machines at a large scale and this setup which promotes human-machine interaction whilst increasing productivity can be vaguely termed as an industry. It is understandable why the lure of machines is so strong. The general consensus is that not only does it increase the productivity but it can also decrease the number of unfortunate incidents which could have happened to humans had it not been for machines. The machines solve dual purpose and that is why more and more industries are being set up by capitalists in order to maximize the earning potential.
The fact that is often forgotten while setting up industries is that it may save the people a lot of hassle in short term, but when one looks at it in a long term vision, these industries are a cause of major health hazards. Prolonged exposure to these industries can severely deteriorate the long term health of a person. The increased amount of industries ensures the fact that not even the people who have homes anywhere near these industries are safe from their hazards. Considering this scenario, a need for a profession which could identify the potential health hazards of working in an industry and take necessary actions to avoid it was taken note of.
Industrial hygiene is the science of identifying, evaluating and curing any type of health hazard which may emanate from working in the industry that can have potentially harmful effect on the working community in the industry. To facilitate diagnosing of the problem, hazards are differentiated into various types like biological, chemical, physical and psychosocial etc. This is a highly scientific profession which requires one to have a thorough knowledge of various scientific areas so as to ably use all the equipments available to properly diagnose the health hazard. These health hazards range from physical ones like extreme noise, extremely high or low temperature or a continued exposure to radiation.
Besides this there are diseases related to chemical elements which come under the category of chemical hazards. The restrictive measures to curb this problem include rotation of workers in a set period of time to reduce the effects of hazards on the body. If the danger from a chemical is high, then sometimes it is replaced with a less hazardous chemical or eliminated all together. All these measure ensure that the workers responsible for the development of the country do not have to give their life in return.
