Conditioning drills are a part of the daily routine of a martial art student. Conditioning hands is extremely important in martial arts due to the sustained impact your hands have to undergo. You should protect them as much as possible, and strengthening them is one of the ways to do so. There are various methods which martial art experts adopt to strengthen their hands. Here are a few effective hand conditioning techniques that you, as a martial art student, should adopt:

Fist and Wrist Push Ups

When starting your training, initiate by doing fist pushups using a wall. Do these pushups just as you would do it on the ground. By starting off with fist pushups on the wall, not much pressure is exerted on your knuckles of the first two joints. Strong muscles are developed in the process of these pushups. A couple of months will be required by your fists to get used to this exercise. After that, you can start wrist pushups (palms facing your body) to strengthen your wrists when they hit hard surfaces. When your fists and wrists become used to this exercise, increase the number of pushups and repeat over and over again.

Makiwara Training

The Makiwara training includes a 2x4 or a 4x4 piece of wood which is wrapped around a rope. It is either attached to a wall or fastened to the ground. The sole purpose of this wooden stick with a rope is to be struck with multiple body parts. This training has been controversial and is said to be more destructive than useful; however, one should be aware of the techniques of this type of training before attempting it.

Hand Grip Exercises

Hand grip exercises are another way of conditioning hands for martial arts. These exercises are performed with the help of hand grip devices, thanks to which you continuously squeeze and apply pressure to a lever type device. This provides additional resistance, strengthens your forearm muscles, increases hand endurance, improves dexterity, and also enhances your ability to perform everyday tasks such as typing, carrying things, writing etc.
