Complete Building Solutions - Formulating High-Energy Cement Products

by Pooja Late so cut

Cement is a product that is used globally and manufactured at different cement plants. The cement industry is uniting globally. The major and most noticeable market for cement is the building or construction industry, where there is a lot of application in combining water to produce concrete. Cement plant that produces these cement account for more than one-third of the energy used in the world. The energy consumed by the direct process of CO2 emission is up to 6.7 Gigatonnes (Gt), which is almost 25 per cent of the total emission from the world. The iron and steel sectors have 30 per cent of the emission, the cement industry or non-metallic industry covers about 27 percent while the chemicals and petrochemical production has about 16 percent. The manufacturing of cement by plants comprises of the heating, calcining and sintering of mixed and ground materials to form clicker.

This has made the manufacturing of cement to be the third biggest cause of the CO2 emissions by man as a result of the production of lime, which is the primary material in cement. So, during cement production, energy saving has the tendency of lowering environmental impact. In the concrete and cement industry, there has been moved for the reduction of CO2 and improvement in the efficiency of energy usage. And this can be finally resolved through the following process

·         By the adjustment of the chemical in the composition of cement and;

·         By changing the processes during the manufacturing and production of cement.

The second point can be improved through the change in energy management and also through the investment of new equipment or still by upgrading to the latest technology available. The adjustment in the chemical formulation of cement has been shown to reduce the emission of CO2 and also save energy, but they haven’t be adopted in most places and this has been hindered because setting up a totally new standard for the cement industry is complex and needs a lot of time. Setting up a cement plant is capital intensive. Most of the prospect for the improvement of energy stability and the reduction of CO2 emissions can be derived when there is an improvement in the manufacturing process of cement. In the cement industry, the processing of the raw materials to form cement in a temperature above 8000C is known as pyro-processing and it is a very popular procedure used. This procedure gives rise to the 74 per cent of the total consumption of energy in concrete/cement industries. The heat usage during this pyro-processing is a little higher than 30 per cent. In spite of this, there is still a significant possibility for improvement in this area.

Grinding and milling amount to 5.8 per cent of concrete or cement energy consumption. These procedures have an energy productivity, which ranges from 6 to 25 per cent and also render a good chance for saving energy
