Communication Skills & Presentation Training - Why Are They Important?

by Dracie Bradley Professional Marketer and Data Analyst

Being a good communicator is an essential skill for presenters. After all, effective communication only happens if the receiver understands the message you are trying to convey. Though it may sound simple, getting your point across during a presentation can be challenging. Unfortunately, many presenters need help finding themselves.

With a roomful of executives or decision-makers sitting in front of you, a well-crafted presentation combined with a polished delivery can make you appear like quite the authority in your industry. Fortunately, you don't have to be a natural public speaker to command an audience. Speaking with confidence and authority can happen with planning and practicing your communication skills classes.

Here are some presentation tips to keep in mind:

1. Know Your Material

You can't be an authority on something you know nothing about. Therefore, always spend time thoroughly researching your topic before the presentation. Educate yourself as much as possible so you can confidently share your knowledge. You should know your subject matter so well that you can deliver your presentation without any notes. When you can speak clearly about a subject matter and make it look easy, it looks impressive to an audience and immediately puts you in the category of authority on the topic.

2. Stay Relevant

Even if you are incredibly knowledgeable about your topic, if you don't deliver the material in a relevant way to your audience, they will not view you as an authority. Someone who shares something of immediate value may not be looked at in the same way. Familiarize yourself with your audience's current issues or problems, take presentation training, and try to speak to their specific needs.

3. Capture Their Attention Right Away

The first few minutes of your presentation are crucial, as this is your chance to make a strong first impression. A great opener sets the tone for the rest of your presentation, so take this opportunity to command the attention of your audience right away.

4. Speak Definitively

You will never convince your audience of anything if you use phrases like "I think" or "I'm pretty sure that…" If you are going to say something, say it with confidence. Try to replace those phrases with "I know" or "I can assure you that" instead.

5. Provide Evidence

To appear as a credible authority in your industry, you must provide evidence that backs up your claims. You can use graphs, charts, demonstrations, or other visuals to prove your points. This shows the audience that you know your stuff and makes your presentation more memorable and engaging.

6. Strong Body Language

Powerful stances, good eye contact, vocal inflection, and meaningful gestures are all excellent techniques for coming across as an authority in your industry. Rehearse your body language in front of a mirror or record yourself to understand better how your audience will see you.

7. Tell a Story

A well-told story can captivate an audience. After all, stories are how we relate to each other, allowing speakers to connect emotionally with their audience. Whether explaining data or pitching a new product, bring your topic to life with a story.

It can't be said enough how important it is to practice your presentation. No matter how knowledgeable you are, your audience will never find your presentation credible if you are stumbling over words, reading from a slide, or nervously checking your notes. One great way to prepare is to practice in front of friends or coworkers who can provide helpful feedback. This will help you get used to speaking in front of a live audience, as well as practicing eye contact, body language, tone of voice, and overall delivery.
