Turmeric is a very common spice in Indian households. It is used in most Indian dishes and has also proven to have many medicinal benefits. It comes from the roots of Curcuma longa, which contains a chemical known as curcumin. This chemical curcumin is proven to reduce swelling, and thus, it is often used to treat conditions that involve pain, inflammation, and swelling. People commonly use turmeric for many other health conditions such as osteoarthritis, hay fever, depression, high cholesterol, etc. It can also be used to treat a type of liver disease and itching. It is a primary ingredient in curry powder and is a traditional spice in the Indian household.



Turmeric is also known to be the most effective nutritional supplement and is available all over India. Many companies make turmeric and export it to other countries because of its extensive usage everywhere around the world. There have been higher demands for turmeric in NZ and many other countries because of its ability to be used as a supplement. There is a high demand for all the plant-based protein powders in NZ as they are very beneficial for health and have medicinal properties as well. 

Turmeric has a wide range of uses and has been termed the spice of life due to its versatility. The turmeric powder helps to give an extra flavor to the food without adding any more calories. This chemical called curcumin is also proven to have the potential to reduce heart risks in humans. It is also beneficial in treating Alzheimer’s disease. Many studies have been conducted on the effectiveness of turmeric in many health conditions, and one of the studies was done on the effects of turmeric in treating depression. The study involved sixty people with depression, and it was seen that the chemical present in the turmeric called curcumin has a similar effect as Prozac, which is a common medicine given to patients suffering from depression. Thus turmeric has a wide range of benefits and is a very common and useful Indian spice.
