insecticides contain harmful chemicals. To protect your family, it is best to
avoid commercial products, but this does not mean you have to settle for
less-effective solutions. Natural pest control solutions, such as clove oil,
can be used just as most popular commercial insecticides and are nontoxic.
Many insects, like ants, are attracted to sweet smells, so they
are particularly attracted to the sticky spills on kitchen floors and
countertops. Some insecticides kill insects on contact home and may also have a
residual effect. According to Karen Russ, an information specialist Home &
Garden in Clemson University, eugenol - an essential oil found in cloves -
kills insects on contact, making it an excellent ingredient for use in
household insecticides. Whole cloves, dried can be used as insect repellent,
because, even though the oil has dried, the acrid smell of cloves is repulsive
to pests such as ants, flies and moths.
Using clove oil

Many commercial insecticides or contain toxic substances such as
organophosphates and pyrethrins. These substances are not safe for use in homes
where children and pets are present, because, if ingested or inhaled, these
chemicals can cause serious health problems. Symptoms of insecticide poisoning
may include difficulty breathing, redness or swelling, nausea, dizziness and
even convulsions and coma. Clove oil-based insecticides are a great deal safer
than profitable insecticides and can be used at home without panic of
insecticide poisoning.
