The Cleveland CG16 Wedge is the 2011 successor to last years CG15, which were the first Cleveland wedges to feature their proprietary laser milled club face. These were the 2010 Golf Digest Hotlist Editor’s Choice gold medal award winner.

Cleveland did a club mash-up on the CG16 wedge, using a slightly modified shape of the CG14 wedge which is a little larger and has a bit more of an offset and the spin maximizing technology of the CG15.

As I always say, the list isn’t the all, end all of club guidance, but it’s certainly a great place to get your bearings. For this golf club review, Cleveland sent me a 52, 56, and 60 degree Black Pearl CG16 Wedges.

The CG16 Wedges feature Cleveland Golf’s breakthrough Laser Milled surface roughness technology. Using the precision accuracy of a laser, each face features four perfectly calibrated texture lines milled between each groove exactly to the conforming roughness limit. This more precise and consistent surface roughness application optimizes ball-to-face friction and maximizes spin to the limits within the rules of golf.

The Cleveland CG16 is a cavity back wedges, unlike previous models, which feature perimeter weighting and geometry to deepen center-of-gravity and increase MOI. The result is improved stability and forgiveness on off-center shots whilst still maintaining that solid signature “Cleveland” feel.

The Mizuno JPX800 Driver with Ultimate Dynamic Stability increases average driving distance by specifically targeting an improvement in ball speeds from shots struck above and below the sweet spot. Data from Mizuno’s Tour testing and National Fitting Centers showed that most distance loss occurs when golfers mis-hit from high or low on the clubface. In response, Mizuno’s design team increased the JPX800’s vertical MOI, alongside the standard extension from heel to toe.

In sync with Mizuno’s ‘Balanced Performance’ philosophy, the JPX 800 Driver sits with a square clubface at address, relying on a complex internal weighting system for its straight, high flight. By analyzing thousands of fittings at its National Fitting Centers, Mizuno found that the square set-up best neutralized the amateur’s most destructive shot, the pull straight left. Mizuno’s lightweight Exsar DS5 graphite shaft is fitted as standard at 45.5”.

The Mizuno JPX 800 driver aims to be a driver for all golfers as it replaces the successful MX-700 and the adjustable MP600 driver. It therefore has a tough job to follow but the JPX800 driver manages to pull it off. The rounded triangular shaped head and very slightly closed clubface gives you all the forgiveness of the MX-700 without looking too pointy. The performance was very good with a lovely sound and feel. Better players will like this too as it was easy to shape shots and get a good trajectory. We were not sold on the dark blue color scheme but that is a personal preference as apart from that this is a very competent all round driver for players of all abilities.
