by Robert Morgan airzonehvac

If you live in a home with a furnace, you must schedule regular maintenance to ensure that everything is working in order.

If you do not schedule proper maintenance, it will lead to complications that will result in you either spending thousands of dollars or replacing the heating system.

However, you can avoid this if you take simple steps and do some proper cleaning by yourself. You can easily clean furnace air filters by yourself.

You can clean and even replace your air filters, which will ensure that good quality air flows through the furnace. To clean the best furnace air filters for home in Ottawa, you need to follow the steps mentioned in this blog.

Things you will need to clean the air filters

  • Vacuum machine

  • Screwdriver

  • Bucket

  • Hot water

  • Vinegar

How to clean the air filters?

Follow the steps mentioned below to clean your air filters.

1- Turn off the furnace and find the air filter

Turning off the furnace is important because it will stop the unfiltered air from flowing around the house while you clean the filters. Once it is turned off, locate the vent and open the vents containing the filter with the screwdriver.

After you’ve removed all the filters, inspect the filters for damage. If they are in proper condition, you can start with vacuuming, or else you need to replace them. If you need to replace it, then the installation is easy. Like you’ve removed the filters, install it back in.

2- Vacuuming the air filters

Before vacuuming the air filters:

1. Take the filter outside, as it will stop the dust from spreading around in your room.

2. Use a small brush at the end of the vacuum to remove small debris.

3. During vacuuming, try running the brush across the filter to loosen up the stuck-up build-up of dust easily.

3- Wash it with vinegar and water

Vinegar is used in several cleaning supplies because it can wash off stubborn stains with ease. In the bucket, mix equal parts of vinegar with water. Once the bucket is filled, toss in the filter and let it soak for up to an hour.

Once you remove the filter, you will see that it has retained its original light colour. You can use a garden hose to wash off any traces of vinegar or simply run it beneath a tap. Rinse the filter, and use a low-pressure setting to air-dry the filter.

4- Let it dry

Once you’ve removed it out of the vinegar solution and air dried it, you can then let it dry for some time. After an hour, fix the filter inside the vent, like how you removed them, and your furnace air filters are clean.
