Clarke hotel itself – there are anecdotes galore, including the story of how Mr
Ernest Clarke arrived in the 1920s and managed The Cecil. Mr Clarke himself
went into the hotel business, and got a contract for catering to the Delhi
Club. He had taken a liking to a hardworking employee while at The Cecil, Mohan
Singh Oberoi, and asked the latter to join him. Later, the Clarkes Hotel was
opened and Mr Oberoi joined hands with Mr Clarke. When Mr Clarke retired, the
offer of ownership was made to Mr Oberoi.
