Serving on any jury case is a privilege and must be taken quite seriously. You are been asked, as a law abiding citizen of the community to play a role in ensuring justice is fairly handed down in a given situation. Your input will be highly valued as this determines the outcome of the case. So, you are called for jury duty; there are some requirements, by law you are hoped to be able to meet.

1.            There should be no relationship with anyone involved in the case. You must not be related to either, judge, attorneys whether for defense or persecution, or even the person or persons on trial. This automatically disqualifies you from serving on the particular case. This does not mean you may not be called for another case at any other time.

2.            The case before you, you must not have any knowledge of the case. This means you maybe biased in your views of the evidence before you during deliberation. Many attorneys are of this view, and so, they will dismiss you on this count.

3.            If you have no knowledge of the case and are not biased one way or another, then you stand a good chance of being chosen for the jury place. If you are considered to be biased during questioning, then you will be disqualified from the position. Your personal feelings must not be taken into the case while serving. For example; if you feel judges are too harsh with their judgment of any situation, then, you will be automatically disqualified.

4.            There must never be a situation you were involved in that is similar to the case before you. This will be considered prejudiced or may come off as having a biased view of the situation you are been questioned to be a part of. It is better if you disqualify yourself from the hearing, for the position of juror and hope to be chosen for another case.

5.            If you are found to have lied under oath as the selection will be done under oath; you will be charged for perjury and arrested.

Should you be chosen for jury duty, it is your responsibility to inform yourself from the handbook you will be presented. This will give a better understanding of conduct during the trial. This is important if you are serving in a jury capacity for the first time.
