Are you ready to start with your DIY project for wood finishing? The following tips will help you with the correct selection of wood finish for the end result you want.

  • First off, determine how the wooden product will be used. Is it going to be exposed to water, sun, moisture or other elements? Also, decide on whether you want your finish to be transparent, semitransparent or opaque. Depending upon your requirements, buy the appropriate finish.
  • If you’re refinishing exterior wood surfaces, use a paint that is labelled for exterior use and preferably contains a fungicide. You may also want a weatherproof finish for outdoor wood. For this, you can use good quality wood stains made with sealers such as General Finishes Enduro White Undercoat.
  • If you want to change the color of raw wood, use a wood stain. Wood stains also make inexpensive wood (pine) look more expensive (like cherry, oak, or mahogany)
  • For high moisture or high traffic areas, you may need to apply a thicker finish. For that, you can go for a high-quality wood varnish such as Exterior 450.

In the end, whatever finish you choose, remember wooden finishes protect your wooden crafts and furniture apart from making them look good. So, give a finish that is appropriate to the wood surface and make them stay with you for a lifetime.
