They must also pass the American Board of Home Health Care Licensing exam. Once licensed, full-time home health care consultants are responsible for providing services to their clients in accordance with the contract between the client and the consultant.

State-Mandated Annual Home Health Care Training is required of home health care consultants in all states. Although most states do not require home health care training, most also require a minimum of 200 hours of continuing education in areas related to the practice of home health care. In order to maintain licensure and maintain certification, home health care consultants must pass a comprehensive examination based on written and verbal assessment by the state licensing agency. Candidates wishing to pursue certification must complete an additional two years of state-mandated continuing education in areas related to the practice of home health care.

To meet the challenges identified above, the nation's home health care consultants must be properly educated, obtain appropriate licensing, and participate in continuing education through their state's department of health. This will allow them to provide their clients with the highest quality care at reasonable rates. The 21st century health care consultants need to stay abreast of the regulatory changes and continue to be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem. Only then can the home health care agency ensure its success and eliminate unnecessary regulations that limit the type of care services they are able to provide to their clients.
